Can you preview an Instagram post before you publish it?

Short answer

Partly. Instagram shows you the crop, the filters, the caption and a reel’s cover as you build a post, and Meta Business Suite adds a preview of how it will look in the Facebook and Instagram feeds. Neither draws your profile grid, which cuts every post to a 3:4 tile from its middle: a 4:5 photo loses 34 pixels on each side there, and a 1080 × 1920 reel cover loses 240 at the top and bottom. Instagram says a reel’s cover can’t be changed once it is uploaded.

What Instagram shows before you share

Instagram’s Help Center describes the steps, not a separate preview mode. For a photo or carousel you adjust how each item is cropped by touching it, and the orientation you choose applies to all of them (Instagram Help). Filters, the caption and the location come next, then Share. For a reel, the share screen has Edit cover, where you pick a frame or a picture from your device (Instagram Help), and Instagram’s own guide says the cover is what shows on your profile grid (About Instagram).

We searched the Help Center on 11 October 2026 and found no page about previewing a finished post or your grid before sharing. We did find the limit that makes this matter: Instagram’s page on reel size says you can’t edit a cover after you have uploaded it (Instagram Help).

What Meta Business Suite shows

Meta Business Suite’s composer shows a preview of the post, reel or story on the right of the screen, and the page says you can preview how it will look on both your Facebook and your Instagram feed (Meta Business Help Center). It describes feed previews. We found nothing on that page about the profile grid.

What no preview shows: the grid

Your profile shows every post as a tile of the same shape. On 11 October 2026 we measured the tiles on Instagram’s own profile at 311 × 414 pixels, 3:4, with each picture cut from its middle (measured on the web, not the phone app). Instagram’s Help Center gives no figure for it. So a post that looks right in the feed can look cut on the profile:

What you postPixelsWhat the grid cuts away
3:4 photo1080 × 1440Nothing
4:5 photo1080 × 135034 px on each side
1:1 photo1080 × 1080135 px on each side
Reel cover, 9:161080 × 1920240 px at the top and at the bottom
CarouselIts first slideAs for the first slide’s shape; the rest are not shown

A carousel’s tile is its first photo or video (Instagram Help). Put the words and the face of a cover in the middle, and the point of a photo away from its left and right edges.

Two things we could not verify from Instagram’s pages: where the feed cuts a long caption, and how the post looks on a given phone. A preview drawn by a tool, or by Meta, is a drawing at one size.

Which free tool draws which preview

None of Mellow’s free tools posts anything. Each works in your browser on a picture you choose, and its page says what, if anything, leaves it.

What the post checker is, and is not

The post checker is not a visual preview. It takes a caption, a title and a number of media items and tells you which of Mellow Hub’s input rules each network’s entry breaks: caption length, a required title, how many items a post takes. It draws nothing and does not look at a picture. A post that passes is not certified: the account, the media and the permissions still have to be right, and the network judges the file itself.

Previewing through Mellow Hub

Mellow Hub’s agent interface has a preview_post tool that asks for a rendered preview of how a post will read on each network without publishing anything, and a free validate_post that lists every rule a post breaks. Both need a valid post for connected channels. We have not verified how closely the rendered preview matches each network’s own screen, and it does not replace looking at your grid after you post.

The first 3 posts are free, however many networks each one goes to, and need no card. After that Hub is paid: plans start at $19 a month (Solo), after a 7-day trial with a card on file that costs nothing if you cancel before it ends, and a monthly plan's first month is 20% off. Publishing is unlimited on every plan, under a fair-use ceiling that stops automated floods (900 publications a month on Solo), where one publication is one post on one account, so a post sent to five networks counts as five toward it. There are no automatic overage charges.

Questions people also ask

Can I see how a post will look on my Instagram grid before posting?

Not in the pages we read. Instagram’s Help Center describes cropping and editing in the share flow, and no grid preview. The profile shows every post in a 3:4 tile cut from its middle, so you can work out what is cut from a post’s shape, and the free grid maker and reels cover maker draw it.

Does Meta Business Suite show a preview?

Yes. Its Help Center page says that, on the composer’s right side, you see a preview of your post, reel or story, and that you can preview how it will look on both your Facebook and Instagram feed. It describes feed previews, and we found nothing there about the profile grid.

Can I change a reel’s cover after posting?

Not according to Instagram’s Help Center, which says that right now you can’t edit your cover photo after you’ve uploaded it. Choose the frame or picture on the share screen with Edit cover before you tap Share.

Why is my photo cropped on my profile when it looked fine in the feed?

The profile grid cuts each post to a 3:4 tile from its middle. A 4:5 photo loses 34 pixels on each side there and a 1:1 photo 135; it shows whole when opened. Only a 3:4 photo shows whole in the tile.

Is the post checker a preview of my post?

No. It checks a caption, a title and a media count against Mellow Hub’s input rules for each network and draws nothing. For how a thumbnail, a grid or a swipe will look, use the tool for that, and look at the live post after you publish.
