How do you find trending reels on Instagram?
Short answer
Instagram has no single list of trending reels. It shows what is popular in four places: the Reels tab, the audio or hashtag page under any reel, the trending tab of its Edits app, and Inspiration in the Professional dashboard, which needs a public professional account. None of them can be exported or filtered by niche. To find the reels that took off in your niche, compare each reel’s views with the median views of its creator’s recent reels.
Where Instagram shows what is trending
Read on 8 November 2026. The steps are the Help Center’s.
| Where | How to open it | What Instagram’s page says | Who can see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reels tab | Tap Reels at the bottom of the app (Help Center). | Suggested reels, picked from the accounts you follow and the reels you recently watched, liked or engaged with (Help Center). In May 2024 Instagram said it would add curated suggestions there “to help you understand what's trending” (Instagram for Creators). | Everyone. The 2024 post does not say who gets the curated ones. |
| Audio and hashtag pages | Tap the audio name or the hashtag at the bottom of a reel (Help Center). | Other reels that use the same audio or hashtag, with Use audio to record your own. | Everyone. |
| Edits app | Tap the trending tab at the bottom of Edits (Help Center). | Reels from public accounts that are trending on Instagram, suggested by how popular they may be, how people interact with them and when or where they were shared, each with its views, likes and shares. | The page names no account type. |
| Inspiration | Profile, then Professional dashboard, then Inspiration (Help Center, Instagram for Creators). | Reels popular with your audience, and trending songs and audio clips to bookmark, refreshed from current trends. | A public professional (business or creator) account. Tools vary by account type, region and eligibility. |
| Explore | Explore (Help Center). | Posts from accounts you don’t follow, chosen from the accounts you follow, what you have liked and your connections. | Everyone, and different for each person. |
| Hashtag search | The search bar at the top (Help Center). | A hashtag’s top posts, ranked by a mix of views and viewer interaction, says Meta’s developer reference. | Everyone. |
What changed and when. On 14 April 2023 Meta announced a destination for trends: the top trending songs on Reels, how many times each audio had been used, and the top topics and hashtags. It did not say where it sits or who gets it, and no Help Center page we read today names it. Instagram’s pages now point to Inspiration in the Professional dashboard, described on 30 May 2024.
What Instagram does not show
- A list you can sort or export. No page we read offers trending reels or sounds by country, niche or period. Explore, Inspiration and the Edits tab are chosen for you, so two accounts see different reels.
- A “Trending” arrow. Guides elsewhere describe an arrow or a Trending label next to some sounds. No Instagram page we read mentions one: the page on adding music says only that Music searches the music library. We cannot say who sees it or what it measures.
- Why something trends. The Creators FAQ says Instagram detects trends “using factors like audio and hashtags” and weighs their popularity on Reels. It gives no threshold and no figure.
- Every view count. A creator can hide like and view counts on a post (Help Center), and a video inside a post of several photos and videos shows none (Help Center).
How to find reels that took off in your niche
A reel with 100,000 views means little alone. On an account that always gets 100,000 it is an ordinary day; on one that usually gets 5,000 it reached far past its audience, and that is the reel worth studying. This comparison is what people mean by finding outliers.
- Gather accounts in your niche from audio pages, hashtag pages and Explore.
- Note the view count of each of a creator’s last ten or so reels. Instagram says a video’s view count is visible to anyone who can see the post.
- Sort them and take the middle one, the median. An average would be dragged up by the very hit you are looking for.
- Divide each reel’s views by the median. Near 1 is a usual reel for that account; far above 1 reached beyond its audience.
- Open the high ones and note what they share: the sound, the first seconds, the format, the length.
Worked example, with invented round numbers for one imaginary account:
| Reel, oldest first | Views | Views ÷ median |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 12,000 | 1.0 |
| 2 | 9,000 | 0.8 |
| 3 | 14,000 | 1.2 |
| 4 | 120,000 | 10.0 |
| 5 | 11,000 | 0.9 |
| 6 | 15,000 | 1.3 |
| 7 | 10,000 | 0.8 |
| 8 | 13,000 | 1.1 |
| 9 | 12,000 | 1.0 |
Sorted, the fifth of the nine counts is 12,000: that is the median. Reel 4 scores 10, ten times this creator’s usual audience. Against the average of 24,000 it would score only 5. There is no official threshold for an outlier; pick one and keep it the same across accounts.
Limits of the method:
- Two definitions of a view. One Help Center page counts a view at three seconds, without loops; the reel insights page counts every time a reel starts to play or replay. Comparing one creator’s reels with each other keeps the counting the same.
- Paid reach. Meta’s Business Discovery page says its
view_countincludes both paid and organic views, so a boosted reel can pass for an outlier. - Age. A reel posted yesterday is still collecting views.
Then make your own version rather than a copy: Instagram’s reel formats and hashtags on reels cover that side.
Can a tool list trending reels for you?
Not through Meta’s API, on the pages we read:
- Business Discovery reads one professional account whose username you already know, queried from your own professional account: comments, likes and
view_counton its media, and nothing for age-gated accounts (Meta for Developers). It finds no accounts for you. - Hashtag Search returns a hashtag’s most popular posts (
top_media) or those published in the last 24 hours (recent_media). It needs App Review for the Instagram Public Content Access feature, counts at most 30 unique hashtags per account in a rolling 7 days, returns 50 results a page and leaves out ads (guide, recent media). It returns no usernames, and its list of fields has no view count.
Neither lists trending sounds.
Where Mellow Hub fits
Since 8 November 2026, Mellow Hub’s Trends finds reels that took off in a topic: it reads Instagram’s public Reels through a data provider, the way a visitor sees them, shows each reel’s ×N against its creator’s usual views, and writes a breakdown with your own version of it. A new Instagram search costs 2 AI credits, and Hub never downloads or reposts the reel. Its other part starts once your own reel is made, by you or by your AI agent (Claude, ChatGPT or another) through Hub’s MCP server or REST API. Hub checks the video and the caption against each network’s rules before anything is sent, then publishes the reel or schedules it, together with the other networks you connected. On Instagram: A professional (Business or Creator) Instagram account. A personal account cannot publish through any API. Scheduling reels has the detail.
One boundary holds for every tool that publishes through Instagram’s API: the publishing reference has audio_name, which names a reel’s own audio, and no parameter for a sound from Instagram’s library, so the sound goes out inside the file. For a sound chosen in the app, Hub can leave the Instagram part to you: at the post’s time it sends you the video, the caption and a link to the sound, and counts the reel as out once you say it is posted.
Hub has no free plan: a new account starts with a 7-day free trial of a monthly plan. Starting it takes a card, and $0 is charged that day; cancel before the 7 days end and nothing is charged. After the trial the plan renews monthly, from $19 a month (Solo), and the first paid month is 20% off. A yearly plan is charged on the day you choose it, with no free trial. Publishing is unlimited on every plan, under a fair-use ceiling that stops automated floods (900 publications a month on Solo), where one publication is one post on one account, so a post sent to five networks counts as five toward it. There are no automatic overage charges.
Questions people also ask
Can a personal account see trending audio on Instagram?
Partly. Inspiration, where Instagram says you can bookmark trending songs and audio clips, sits in the Professional dashboard, which needs a public business or creator account. A public personal account gets Your dashboard instead. The Reels tab and the audio page under a reel are not limited to professional accounts on the pages we read, and the Edits page names no account type.
Does using a trending sound get a reel more views?
Instagram does not promise it. Its Creators FAQ says “Using trending audio can also impact distribution”, and the Help Center lists reels with music from Instagram’s library, or original audio made with the Reels audio tool, among those it recommends. Neither page gives a figure.
Why can’t I see the view count on some reels?
The creator may have switched on Hide like and view counts for that post, which Instagram lets them do before sharing. Videos inside a post with several photos and videos show no view count at all, and Instagram says view counts appear only on videos uploaded after 19 November 2015.
Is Explore the same for everyone?
No. Instagram’s Help Center says Explore shows posts from accounts you don’t follow, selected from the accounts you follow, the photos and videos you have liked and your connections on Instagram. What it shows you is not a list of what is trending for everybody.
Can I get trending reels through Instagram’s API?
Not as a list. Hashtag Search returns the most popular or the most recent public posts for one hashtag, after App Review, for at most 30 unique hashtags in 7 days, without usernames or view counts. Business Discovery reads the metrics of one professional account whose username you already have.
