What is the character limit on Bluesky?
Short answer
300 characters per post, and Bluesky counts them the way you see them: its documentation defines the limit as 300 Unicode grapheme clusters. So an emoji is one character, even a family or a flag built from several code points, and an accented letter is one. A longer thought goes in a thread of replies, each with its own 300.
Bluesky’s limits, from its own pages
| What | Limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Post text | 300 graphemes | Bluesky documentation |
| Photos in a post | 10 in the Bluesky app since June 2026; 4 in the developer documentation | Bluesky, documentation |
| Photo file size | 1,000,000 bytes each, in the developer documentation | documentation |
| Video | Up to 10 minutes and 300 MB since August 2026 | Bluesky |
All read on 1 October 2026. The app has moved ahead of the documentation for photos, so a tool that follows the documentation may still stop at four.
Why Bluesky counts differently
Most counters count units of text, in which an emoji is two or more, so the same post can look over the limit in one counter and fit on Bluesky. Bluesky counts graphemes, the characters as a reader sees them. X, by contrast, counts every emoji as two and every link as 23. The free character counter shows Bluesky’s count next to X’s, Threads’ and the rest, so a post written for one fits the others.
Posting to Bluesky with Mellow Hub
Hub connects Bluesky with your handle and an app password, which you create in Bluesky’s settings and can revoke there at any time. It checks a post against Bluesky’s 300 graphemes, with up to 4 images or one video, before anything is sent, and lets Bluesky have its own caption when the same post goes to longer networks.
Hub is paid: plans start at $19 a month (Solo), after a 7-day trial with a card on file that costs nothing if you cancel before it ends, and a monthly plan's first month is 20% off. Publishing is unlimited on every plan, under a fair-use ceiling that stops automated floods (900 publications a month on Solo). One publication is one post on one account, so a post sent to five networks counts as five. There are no automatic overage charges.

How many characters can a Bluesky post have?
300, counted as graphemes: each emoji, letter or accented letter as a reader sees it counts once.

Yes. Bluesky counts grapheme clusters, so even an emoji made of several code points, such as a family or a flag, counts once.
How many photos can a Bluesky post have?
