What size should a Pinterest Pin be?

Short answer

Pinterest recommends 1000 × 1500 pixels, a 2:3 shape, for a standard Pin, and warns that a Pin taller than 2:3 may be cut off in people’s feeds. The image can be a BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF or WEBP of up to 20 MB when you upload it on the web. A video Pin fills the screen at 9:16 (1080 × 1920) and runs from 4 seconds to 5 minutes. The title holds 100 characters and the description 800.

Why 2:3, and what happens to taller Pins

Pinterest’s feed is a grid of columns, and a Pin takes as much height as its shape gives it. A 2:3 Pin is tall enough to stand out in a column and short enough to show whole. Pinterest says a Pin with a shape taller than 2:3 might get cut off in people’s feeds, so a very long Pin may lose its bottom. A square Pin shows whole too, but takes a third less room than a 2:3 one.

At 1000 pixels wide, 1500 tall is the recommended size; a larger image at the same 2:3 shape, such as 2000 × 3000, is fine as long as the file stays under 20 MB.

Video Pins

A video Pin can be square, vertical or anything in between, from 1:2 to 1:1; at 9:16, 1080 × 1920, it fills a phone screen. It runs from 4 seconds to 5 minutes. Ads have their own, longer ceiling: up to 15 minutes and 2 GB, with 6 to 15 seconds recommended.

Titles and descriptions

A Pin’s title holds up to 100 characters, but a feed may show only the first 40 or so, so put the words people search for first. The description holds up to 800 characters.

Posting Pins with Mellow Hub

Hub publishes one image or one video per Pin to a Pinterest business account, with a title of up to 100 characters and the caption as the Pin’s description. Two things are worth knowing. Hub checks a description against 500 characters, fewer than the 800 Pinterest now allows, so a longer one is reported rather than sent. And a video Pin needs a cover image, which Hub checks for before anything is sent. If you name no board, the Pin goes to the account’s first board, or to a new one if it has none. Hub can send the same image to Instagram, Facebook and the other networks in the same post; it does not resize it, so start from a shape that suits all of them.

Hub is paid: plans start at $19 a month (Solo), after a 7-day trial with a card on file that costs nothing if you cancel before it ends, and a monthly plan's first month is 20% off. Publishing is unlimited on every plan, under a fair-use ceiling that stops automated floods (900 publications a month on Solo). One publication is one post on one account, so a post sent to five networks counts as five. There are no automatic overage charges.
