How to see your Instagram insights
Short answer
In the app: go to your profile, tap Professional dashboard (or Your dashboard on a personal account), then Insights below For professionals. On a computer: open instagram.com, choose Dashboard in the left menu, then Insights. You need a public account, personal or professional. Account insights cover any period in the last 90 days, and insights on a single post, reel or story stay available for up to two years.
What you need first
- A public account. Instagram’s pages say insights are for public accounts, personal or professional. If you switch back to a private account you lose access, and you can get past insights back by making the account public again within 90 days.
- Time since you went public. If you made the account public recently, you may not see past insights.
- Enough audience for the demographics. Audience demographics need you to reach or engage more than 100 accounts, and the trends under Total followers need at least 100 followers.
One older Help Center page, See insights for your Instagram account, still says insights are available only to businesses and accounts with high engagement. The newer pages, linked here, say any public account. We follow the newer ones.
In the Instagram app
From Instagram’s dashboards page:
- Tap Profile, or your profile picture in the bottom right.
- On a professional account, tap Professional dashboard. On a personal account, tap Your dashboard. If you don’t see it on your profile, tap More to go to Settings and activity.
- On a professional account, tap Insights below For professionals. On a personal account, tap Your dashboard below Your insights and tools.
The overview shows Views, Interactions, New followers and Content you shared. Tap any of them for detail. Tap the (i) in the top right to read the definition of each metric, and use the drop-down at the top to choose a preset or custom time frame within the past 90 days.
On a computer
From Instagram’s account and content insights page:
- Select Dashboard from the left-hand menu.
- If you have a professional account, select Insights below For professionals. If you have a personal account, select Your dashboard below Your insights and tools.
- From the Insights drop-down, choose Account or Content.
- Use the drop-down to set the date range: the last 7, 14, 30 or 90 days, or a custom range of any dates in the last 90 that are at least a day apart.
For one post, reel or story
| Content | How to open its insights | How long they stay |
|---|---|---|
| Post | Go to your profile, tap the post, tap View insights | Up to two years |
| Reel | In the Reels tab of your profile, open the reel and tap View insights | Up to two years from the reel’s publish date; reels from 14 May 2021 on |
| Story | Swipe up on the story and tap the insights icon. On a computer, click Options at the top right of the story, then View insights | Up to two years, though an expired story can’t be viewed |
| Past stories | Profile, then View insights, then find the story under Top content based on engagement | Same |

What the numbers are
Instagram’s current insights lead with Views (times content was played or displayed), Viewers (unique accounts that saw it on screen), Interactions (likes, comments, saves and shares) and Accounts engaged (unique accounts that interacted). Reels add watch time, average watch time and follows. The difference between reach, impressions, views and viewers has its own answer. Some of these metrics are labelled by Instagram as estimated and in development, so treat them as estimates.
If you can’t see insights
- Make sure the account is public. A private account has no insights.
- If you changed account type, note that Instagram’s troubleshooting page says insights are lost on switching a business or creator account back to personal, with the data kept for 90 days, while its newer pages say a public personal account has them. If yours vanished, make the account public.
- If the demographics are missing, pick a longer preset such as the last 30 days, since Instagram needs more than 100 accounts reached or engaged and a preset time frame.
Beyond Instagram’s app
Instagram’s insights are for your own account and its content, in the app and on instagram.com. The pages we read describe viewing, with a date range, and no export. Mellow Hub shows a different thing: for the posts on your connected accounts, the views and likes each network reports, over 7, 30 or 90 days, as lifetime counters per post. It is not account insights and has no demographics.
Hub is paid: plans start at $19 a month (Solo), after a 7-day trial with a card on file that costs nothing if you cancel before it ends, and a monthly plan's first month is 20% off. Publishing is unlimited on every plan, under a fair-use ceiling that stops automated floods (900 publications a month on Solo). One publication is one post on one account, so a post sent to five networks counts as five. There are no automatic overage charges.
Questions people also ask
Can I see Instagram insights on a personal account?
Yes, if the account is public. Instagram’s dashboards page says to tap Your dashboard on a personal account, then Your dashboard below Your insights and tools. A professional account has a Professional dashboard with extra tools.
Why can’t I see my Instagram insights?
Check four things. Is the account public? Was it made public only recently, which can hide past insights? Was it switched back from a professional account? Are you looking at demographics, which need more than 100 accounts reached or engaged and a preset time frame?
How far back do Instagram insights go?
Account insights cover any period within the last 90 days. Insights on an individual post, reel or story are available for up to two years.
Can I see another account’s Instagram insights?
The pages we read describe insights for your own account and the content you created, and none describes insights on someone else’s account.
Can I see Instagram insights on a computer?
Yes. On instagram.com, select Dashboard in the left-hand menu, then Insights below For professionals, or Your dashboard on a personal account, and choose Account or Content.
