How long can an Instagram caption be?
Short answer
2,200 characters, emoji and spaces included, according to Instagram’s API documentation; the Help Center itself states no figure. A caption may carry up to 5 hashtags since December 2025. In the feed only the first lines show before “more”, so the first sentence carries the post; the rest can be as long as it needs to be.
The limits, from Instagram’s own pages
- Caption: 2,200 characters, in Instagram’s API reference, read on 1 October 2026. Instagram’s Help Center gives no number.
- Hashtags: up to 5 on a post; with more, the caption or comment won’t post (Instagram Help).
- Words: there is no word limit, only characters. At an average of five or six characters a word plus a space, 2,200 characters is roughly 300 to 350 words.
How the characters are counted
Every letter, space, line break and punctuation mark counts as one. Instagram doesn’t document how it counts emoji. Most counters, Mellow Hub’s included, count an emoji as two, because it sits outside the range a single unit of text can hold, and joined emoji such as flags and families as more; leave a margin when a caption full of emoji is close to the limit. Paste it into the free character counter to compare it with every network’s limit at once.
Where the caption folds
The feed shows the caption’s first lines and hides the rest behind “more”. Instagram doesn’t publish where the fold falls; it depends on the screen and the line breaks. Put what the post is about in the first sentence, then the detail, then any call to action.
Captions for several networks at once
The same caption rarely fits everywhere: X allows 280 characters and Threads 500, far below Instagram’s 2,200. Mellow Hub lets each network have its own caption in one post and checks every limit before anything is sent, naming the network that would refuse.
Hub is paid: plans start at $19 a month (Solo), after a 7-day trial with a card on file that costs nothing if you cancel before it ends, and a monthly plan's first month is 20% off. Publishing is unlimited on every plan, under a fair-use ceiling that stops automated floods (900 publications a month on Solo). One publication is one post on one account, so a post sent to five networks counts as five. There are no automatic overage charges.
Questions people also ask
What is the Instagram caption limit in 2026?
2,200 characters, including spaces, line breaks and emoji, according to Instagram’s API documentation. Up to 5 of them can be hashtags.
How many words is 2,200 characters?
Roughly 300 to 350 words of ordinary English, since an average word takes five or six characters plus a space. Instagram counts characters, not words.
Do hashtags and emoji count toward the limit?
Yes. Hashtags are part of the caption, and so are emoji. Instagram doesn’t say how many characters an emoji takes; most counters treat one as two, so leave a margin.
Is the limit different for Reels?
A Reel’s caption follows the same rules as a post’s: the same character limit and the same limit on hashtags.
