A YouTube thumbnail template: where things go, and the file rules it has to meet

Short answer

Build the thumbnail on a 16:9 canvas with one subject on a third line, three or four large words in the rest of the frame and one small brand mark. The zones are ours; they apply YouTube’s own tips to use the rule of thirds, keep text readable and keep the design simple. YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels as a JPG or PNG, up to 2 MB from a phone and 50 MB from a computer. A vertical video needs its own 9:16 version.

The layout template (ours)

YouTube’s thumbnail and title tips ask for an image that is easy to read, not too complex, and composed with the rule of thirds. They name no zones. This table turns the advice into places; the zones, the word count and the margin rule are ours.

Leave the corners free of text. That is our habit, not a YouTube rule: the pages we read don’t say which corners other elements cover on each surface. The free YouTube thumbnail tester shows a thumbnail in YouTube’s home feed, search and sidebar so you can see it.

The file rules the template has to meet

Design on a 16:9 canvas of 1920 × 1080 and export at 3840 × 2160 if your tool scales cleanly; both are 16:9. Don’t export below 1280 × 720. YouTube’s A/B test page says that if any thumbnail in a test is under 720p, every thumbnail in the test is downscaled to 480p (YouTube Help).

A vertical video needs its own thumbnail

For a Short, YouTube recommends a 9:16 upload, and custom Shorts thumbnails can be added only in YouTube Studio on a computer. The page also says that a vertical video with a 16:9 custom thumbnail gets an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages; the custom one still appears on the watch feed, in watch history and on non-mobile platforms.

So the same layers go on a 9:16 canvas: one subject, a shorter headline, the brand mark in the same spot. A landscape thumbnail on a vertical video is not what most viewers will see on those pages.

Check it before you upload

  1. The account is verified. YouTube lets only verified accounts add custom thumbnails.
  2. The file is under the limit for the device you upload from.
  3. It follows the Community Guidelines. YouTube may reject a thumbnail, and add a strike, for nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, or harmful or dangerous content. Repeat offences can remove custom thumbnail privileges for 30 days.
  4. You haven’t hit the daily limit. YouTube caps custom thumbnails per channel per day; the error says “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached”, and the page says to try again in 24 hours.
  5. The title says what the thumbnail says. YouTube asks for titles that represent the video accurately, short, with the important words near the beginning and ALL CAPS and emoji used sparingly.

Testing two or three versions

YouTube Studio can test up to three thumbnails, titles, or both (YouTube Help). The conditions on the page:

  • It runs on a computer, in YouTube Studio, with advanced features enabled.
  • It can’t be used on Shorts, scheduled livestreams or Premieres, or on videos made for kids, for mature audiences or private.
  • A test should finish within two weeks. The option with the highest watch time is shown to everyone; if there is no clear winner, the first one you uploaded stays.
  • Changing the title or thumbnail during a test stops it.

For judging a thumbnail without a test, YouTube’s tips point to click-through rate: on Home and Suggested in the first 24 hours for new viewers, and in the Subscriptions feed for subscribers, on videos with above-average impressions. YouTube’s creator page also suggests refreshing older thumbnails to help a video be found again (YouTube for Creators).

Making one, and sending it with the video

Mellow Hub’s free thumbnail maker builds a thumbnail from your photo and a headline in four layouts and exports 1280 × 720 or 4K. It runs in the browser.

Hub’s YouTube connection can send a thumbnail with the video and requires a title of up to 100 characters, which it checks before sending. YouTube’s own rules still apply: the account must be verified for a custom thumbnail to be accepted. For the full table of sizes see YouTube thumbnail size.

Mellow Hub, whose answer this is, has two more pages for the same job: the YouTube packaging guide covers the thumbnail, title, description, Shorts cover, banner and avatar together, and the AI YouTube thumbnail generator draws a thumbnail from a sentence and spends credits.

The first 3 posts are free, however many networks each one goes to, and need no card. After that Hub is paid: plans start at $19 a month (Solo), after a 7-day trial with a card on file that costs nothing if you cancel before it ends, and a monthly plan's first month is 20% off. Publishing is unlimited on every plan, under a fair-use ceiling that stops automated floods (900 publications a month on Solo), where one publication is one post on one account, so a post sent to five networks counts as five toward it. There are no automatic overage charges.

Questions people also ask

What layout should a YouTube thumbnail have?

YouTube gives no fixed layout. Its tips ask for a composition built on the rule of thirds, branding and descriptive text in a readable font, and a design that isn’t too complex. The template on this page is our version: one subject, three or four words, one brand mark.

What size should the template canvas be?

Any 16:9 canvas. YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels with a minimum width of 640. Design at 1920 × 1080 and export larger if your tool allows, and don’t go below 1280 × 720 if you plan to A/B test.

Does a YouTube Short need a different thumbnail?

Yes, if you want a custom one to show. YouTube recommends 9:16 at 2160 × 3840, added in YouTube Studio on a computer. A 16:9 custom thumbnail on a vertical video is replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 one on the home, explore and subscription pages.

How many thumbnails can I test at once?

Up to three. YouTube’s A/B test runs from YouTube Studio on a computer, can’t be used on Shorts, and should finish within two weeks, with the highest watch time deciding the winner.

Why can’t I upload a custom thumbnail?

YouTube lets only verified accounts add custom thumbnails, caps how many a channel can upload per day, and can remove custom thumbnail privileges for 30 days after repeat Community Guidelines offences. Check each of those in YouTube Studio.
