YouTube packaging: thumbnail, title, description and channel art that work together

How to package a YouTube video and channel: a thumbnail and title that make one promise, the description, the Shorts cover, the banner and the avatar.

By Mellow · Updated

What is YouTube packaging, and what does each part do?

Packaging is everything a viewer sees before they decide to watch. In the feed, in search and beside a playing video that is the thumbnail and the title, read together in a second; on the watch page, the first lines of the description; on the channel page, the banner and the avatar. The parts work when they make one promise the video keeps — YouTube’s own thumbnail and title tips say the same. Mellow Hub has a free tool or a Creative Studio mode for every part, and uploads the video with its title, description and thumbnail when it is ready.

Credits come with a plan, its free trial or a pack (plans and AI credits). The free generators give 5 generations a day in a browser; the free review, 3.

In what order

  1. Write down the one thing the video gives the viewer, in a sentence.
  2. Draft two or three titles that say it plainly.
  3. Make a thumbnail that adds to the title instead of repeating it: one subject, three to five words.
  4. Review the thumbnail and read it at Up next size, next to the videos it competes with.
  5. Write the description: what the video covers in its first lines, then the detail.
  6. Upload the video with its title, description and thumbnail, and let Test & Compare choose between versions.

Starting from the promise keeps the parts from fighting: a thumbnail made first tends to carry the whole message, and the title then repeats it.

Title and thumbnail: one promise, two jobs

Viewers read the two together, so neither should do the other’s work. The thumbnail’s few words are the hook — “I QUIT”, “10 NETWORKS IN 1 CLICK”; the title says what the video actually is — “What changed after I left my job”. If the thumbnail already says it, the title adds the context; if the title says it, the thumbnail shows it. The review in the thumbnail tester writes its three title ideas by that rule, and checks the thumbnail’s words for size, contrast and whether they cover the face.

Channel art, once

The banner and the avatar change rarely, so make them carefully once: the name and a short promise of what the channel is for inside the banner’s safe band, an avatar that is still recognisable at 24 pixels. Creative Studio makes both from a sentence (Channel art); the free banner maker fits your own picture to the banner instead. Hub does not set either on the channel: you upload them in YouTube Studio.

Upload it all at once

Mellow Hub uploads the video with its title, description, privacy setting and custom thumbnail, on its own or together with the same video on Shorts, Reels and TikTok, and checks the 100-character title and the 5,000-character description before anything is sent. Then leave the choice between two or three thumbnails to YouTube Studio’s Test & Compare, which measures what viewers watch. The steps are in publishing a YouTube video with its thumbnail.

Ask an AI agent to package a video

Connected to Mellow Hub’s MCP server, an agent can do the whole package and stop before publishing. Paste and fill in:

Use Mellow Hub. Package my next YouTube video about [topic].
1. Call studio_thumbnail_ideas with the topic and show me the ideas.
2. For the one I pick, call studio_quote, then studio_thumbnail with
format "16:9", variants 2 and the headline in quotation marks.
Use maxCredits from the quote and a stable idempotencyKey.
3. Poll studio_job, then call studio_thumbnail_review on the result.
If its strength is under 8, ask me before studio_thumbnail_improve.
4. Suggest three titles of up to 100 characters that complement
the thumbnail without repeating its words, and a description.
5. Do not publish. Prepare the YouTube post with validate_post and wait.

Spending calls need the ai:generate permission and stay within the daily credit ceiling of the key or app you approved. More in YouTube MCP.

Questions

What is YouTube packaging?

Everything a viewer sees before deciding to watch: the thumbnail and the title in the feed, search and Up next, then the first lines of the description; on the channel page, the banner and the avatar. Good packaging makes one clear promise that the video keeps.

Should the title repeat the words on the thumbnail?

No. They are read together, so each should add something: the thumbnail’s three to five words carry the hook, the title says plainly what the video is. The AI review’s title ideas follow that rule.

How long can a YouTube title and description be?

100 characters for a title and 5,000 for a description, as YouTube’s help states and Mellow Hub checks before an upload. Feeds cut a long title after about two lines.

Which parts are free in Mellow Hub?

Without an account: the thumbnail tester with 3 AI reviews a day, the thumbnail maker, the banner maker, the Shorts cover maker, the profile picture cropper, and the title and description generators (5 generations a day). In Creative Studio, thumbnails cost 10 credits a version, a banner 15, an avatar 10; reviews and ideas cost none.

Does good packaging guarantee views?

No. It decides whether the people YouTube shows the video to understand it at a glance. Which version they actually click and watch is measured by YouTube Studio’s Test & Compare, not by any tool before the upload.
