AI YouTube thumbnail generator: from one sentence to a finished thumbnail

Describe a YouTube thumbnail in a sentence and Creative Studio draws it: words in quotes rendered, 16:9 or 9:16, 1–3 versions at 10 credits each.

How does the AI thumbnail generator work?

In Mellow Hub’s Creative Studio you write what the thumbnail should show, in your own words, and the image model draws it. Your words go to the model almost as you wrote them, inside a short template, so the picture follows the description rather than a template’s idea of it; pick a look from the gallery and the Studio’s art director writes the prompt in that style instead. Anything in quotation marks is drawn as the headline, Cyrillic included. Choose 16:9 for a video (1280 × 720), 9:16 for Shorts, Reels and TikTok, or 1:1 and 4:5, and get 1 to 3 versions at once, at 10 credits each. Every result can be reviewed without spending credits and changed with one sentence.

What it makes

A man pointing at his head under a ring of light, with the words MIND BLOWN!A young man in safety glasses in a lab full of glowing glassware, with the words IT WORKED?!Hands holding a phone that frames a mountain lake at sunset, with the words BEST PHONE CAMERA?A couple on a scooter above a coastal town, with the words Vlog from ITALY

Four of the looks in the Studio’s thumbnail gallery, each made with the same image model the Studio draws with. In the Studio a look is a style you borrow for your own idea: tap one, press Use, and describe your video.

A thumbnail has one job: to be understood at a glance in a row of others, often at 168 pixels wide beside a playing video. So the Studio is built around the things that survive at that size — one subject, a face or an object, three to five large words, strong contrast — and around trying more than one version, because the first idea is rarely the best one.

Write the description: four things to say

  1. Who or what, and the feeling. “A surprised woman in her thirties”, “a cracked phone on a workbench”. An expression or a mood gives the picture its energy.
  2. The headline, in quotation marks. Three to five words that add to the title rather than repeat it: “10 NETWORKS IN 1 CLICK”.
  3. The place and the colours. “Bright cobalt background”, “a dark studio with one warm light”.
  4. Anything that must be there. A product, a logo of your own, an arrow. Attach a photo of the real product so the model draws that one.

An example, ready to paste:

A surprised young woman pointing at a laptop that shows ten social network icons, bright cobalt background, strong light on her face. Headline: "10 NETWORKS IN 1 CLICK"

Stuck for the idea itself? Need an idea? opens a short chat that suggests thumbnail ideas for your video as ready descriptions; one tap puts one in the box. It costs no credits.

Four ways to make one

ModeWhat you give itCredits
New thumbnailA sentence; optionally a look, your own reference picture or a YouTube link whose thumbnail sets the style, and your saved face10 a version, 1–3 versions
Put yourself in a thumbnailA thumbnail you like (an upload or a YouTube link) and your saved face, or a description of the person10 a version
Change somethingOne sentence about what to change, optionally an example picture; everything else stays10
Improve by the recommendationsNothing: the review’s two fixes are made on the picture10
A fictional man in a mustard hoodie taking a selfie
The face: a fictional person, made with the same image model.
The same man pointing at his head under a ring of light, with the words MIND BLOWN!
A thumbnail made with that face in the Mind blown look.
The same thumbnail with the background changed to a purple night sky full of stars
Change something: “only the background to a deep purple night sky full of stars”.

Made by the Studio in production on 7 October 2026, 10 credits each; copies at 640 pixels, nothing retouched.

Each thumbnail keeps its history: every version it has been, the original first, with the change that made it. Going back to an earlier one is free.

Review it before you upload, without spending credits

Under every new thumbnail the Studio reviews it by itself against a 24-point design checklist (23 points for a vertical cover): contrast and focus, the face, the words, curiosity and composition. You get its strength out of 10, six scores, what works, the two fixes that matter most and three title ideas that sit beside the picture instead of repeating it. Under 8, Improve by the recommendations makes the two fixes for 10 credits; at 8 and above there is nothing to fix, and the useful next step is a second version to test.

It is design feedback, not a measurement: no picture alone can say how many people will click. YouTube Studio’s Test & Compare can, with real viewers. Without an account, the YouTube thumbnail tester runs the same review on any thumbnail, 3 times a day.

What it costs

WhatCredits
A thumbnail version (any shape)10

A channel banner, 2560 × 144015
A channel avatar, 800 × 80010
The review, and the idea panelNo credits

The account is free. Credits come with a plan, its free trial or a pack, and the review and ideas work on a plan or the trial: see plans and AI credits. A request shows its total before you send it, and a generation that fails gives its credits back.

From an AI agent, over MCP

Everything above is also a tool for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or your own agent connected to Mellow Hub’s MCP server: studio_thumbnail_ideas, studio_thumbnail, studio_thumbnail_remix, studio_thumbnail_edit, studio_thumbnail_review, studio_thumbnail_improve, studio_banner, studio_avatar, studio_import, studio_faces. A call that spends credits needs the ai:generate permission, a maxCredits cap and an idempotency key, so a retried call is never charged twice; the review and ideas cost nothing. The key or app you approved carries a daily credit ceiling you chose, and nothing an agent makes is published until a post is created with it. The YouTube MCP guide has the prompts.

Then upload the video with it

A finished thumbnail is a Studio project: download it, or use it as the cover of a video post, and Mellow Hub uploads the video to YouTube with that thumbnail, on its own or together with Shorts, Reels and TikTok, checking YouTube’s 100-character title first. The whole order — idea, title, thumbnail, review, description, upload — is in YouTube packaging; the sizes are in YouTube thumbnail size. YouTube’s own thumbnail and title tips ask for a thumbnail that matches the video.

What it will not do

  • Promise clicks or views. No score here is a click-through rate.
  • Put somebody else’s face in. The Studio is built for your own face; a thumbnail you remake has every person in it replaced and its logos, watermarks and channel names removed.
  • Set anything on your channel by itself. Thumbnails go up with a video post you create; banners and avatars are files you upload in YouTube Studio.
  • Get it right every time. An image model can misspell a word or misplace a hand: read each version, and change or remake what is off.

Make your first thumbnail

The account is free; making a thumbnail takes credits, reviewing it takes none.

Questions

Is the AI thumbnail generator free?

No. Making a thumbnail costs credits: 10 a version, and 10 for a change or an improvement. Two things cost no credits: the review of any thumbnail and the idea panel (in the Studio, on a plan or its free trial). Without an account, the YouTube thumbnail tester gives 3 free reviews a day and the free thumbnail maker builds one from your own photo and words.

Can it write words on the thumbnail, in Russian too?

Yes. Words you put in quotation marks are drawn into the picture as the headline, in Latin or Cyrillic letters. Image models still misspell now and then, so read the result; Change something with the right spelling fixes it without remaking the rest.

What sizes does it make?

1280 × 720 for a 16:9 video thumbnail, 1080 × 1920 for a 9:16 Shorts, Reels or TikTok cover, and square 1:1 and 4:5 for posts. YouTube accepts 16:9 thumbnails from 640 pixels wide and recommends 3840 × 2160.

Can I put my own face in it?

Yes. Save a photo of your face once (up to 12 per profile, kept private) and add it to a thumbnail, up to 2 faces at a time. Or use Put yourself in a thumbnail to remake a thumbnail you like with you in it.

Will an AI thumbnail get more clicks?

Nobody can promise that, and this page does not. The review scores a thumbnail on a design checklist; clicks are measured by YouTube Studio’s Test & Compare, which shows real viewers up to three thumbnails and keeps the one they watch most.

Can my AI agent make thumbnails?

Yes, over MCP: studio_thumbnail_ideas, studio_thumbnail, studio_thumbnail_remix, studio_thumbnail_edit, studio_thumbnail_review, studio_thumbnail_improve and more. Each spending call needs the ai:generate permission, a maxCredits cap and an idempotency key, and a key carries a daily credit ceiling you choose. It never publishes on its own: the thumbnail is a Studio project until a post is created.
