At the size of Up next, 168 pixels wide
If the words are hard to read here, cut them down or make them bigger: this is how most people will first see it.
The first uploads from a phone or a computer; the 4K copy, YouTube’s recommended size, from a computer. Check it in the thumbnail tester next to real videos before you upload.
How do you make a YouTube thumbnail for free?
Pick a layout above, choose a photo (a face or one clear object), write three to six words, colour the one that matters by wrapping it in *asterisks*, and download. The maker exports 1280 × 720 under 2 MB, which YouTube takes from any device, and 3840 × 2160, YouTube’s recommended size, under 50 MB for uploading from a computer. Custom thumbnails need a verified YouTube account.
What makes a thumbnail work at 168 pixels
Most people first see a thumbnail small: in Up next beside a playing video, about 168 pixels wide, or in a crowded home feed on a phone. The preview under the maker shows yours at that size. What survives there:
- Three to six words. A thumbnail is a sign, not a caption; the title under it carries the rest.
- One subject. A face looking at the camera or one object, not a scene.
- Contrast over colour. Light text on a dark area or the other way round; an outline helps words sit on a busy photo.
- A clear bottom-right corner. YouTube draws the video’s length there.
- A promise the video keeps. YouTube’s own thumbnail and title tips ask for thumbnails that match the video, so viewers stay.

Questions
Is this YouTube thumbnail maker really free?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no account and no watermark, and your photo is never uploaded. Download as many thumbnails as you like.
What size does it export?
1280 × 720 as a JPG under 2 MB, which YouTube accepts from a phone or a computer, and 3840 × 2160, the size YouTube’s help now recommends, under 50 MB for uploading from a computer.
How do I highlight one word?
Wrap it in asterisks, like *calmer*. That word is drawn in the accent colour. Press Enter in the headline box to start a new line where you want one.
Which fonts does it use?
A heavy sans-serif from your own device: Arial Black where it exists, otherwise the nearest bold system font. The text is drawn at full resolution, so it stays sharp at 4K.
Can it remove the background of my photo?
No. It places and crops your photo but does not cut people out. Mellow Hub’s Creative Studio generates finished covers from a short brief if you want that.
Want the cover made for you?
Mellow Hub’s Creative Studio generates a 16:9 cover at 1280 × 720 from a one-line brief, and Hub uploads the video to YouTube with it, together with Shorts, Reels and TikTok if you like. See YouTube videos and thumbnails.
