Can you auto-post from Instagram to Threads?

Short answer

Yes, from the Instagram app on Android or iPhone. Before you share a post, tap Also share on…, switch on your Threads account and choose Always share posts, so this post and the ones after it go to Threads automatically, or Share this post for this one only. Instagram’s help says the setting isn’t available anywhere else, and that you may get a message if a post can’t be shared. From a computer, Meta Business Suite can cross-post to Threads.

Turning it on

From Instagram’s Help Center, read on 10 October 2026. The page says it is only for people using the Instagram app on Android or iPhone.

  1. Upload or take a photo or video as usual.
  2. Before you share the post, tap Also share on….
  3. Tap the toggle next to your Threads account’s name, then choose Always share posts, which shares this post and your future posts to Threads automatically, or Share this post, which shares only this one and leaves later posts on Instagram.
  4. Tap back at the top left, then Share.

To change your mind later, tap More options before you share a post and switch the Threads toggle off or on. The page says you may get a message when a post can’t be shared to Threads; it doesn’t say which posts those are.

What arrives on Threads

An Instagram post you share appears as a post in your Threads feed and on your Threads profile. Its audience depends on your Threads profile’s privacy setting. If you have turned on sharing to the fediverse, posts that come from Instagram are not shared with people on other servers.

The two copies are separate. Deleting the post on Instagram doesn’t delete it on Threads: Instagram’s help says to go to your Threads profile and delete it there.

Other ways between the two

  • Threads to Instagram. The share button under a Threads post lets you add it to your Instagram story or post it to your Instagram feed (Instagram Help).
  • Meta Business Suite. It can cross-post an Instagram or Facebook post to Threads while you create it. Cross-posting to Threads is available on the desktop version only, and your Threads profile has to be added to the same business portfolio as the Page and Instagram profile (Meta’s page). The same page says that from September 2026 Threads access settings can be managed separately from Instagram, rolling out gradually.
  • Accounts Center. Meta’s page lists sharing posts, stories or reels from Instagram and Facebook to Threads among its connected experiences, and adds that Threads in Accounts Center isn’t available everywhere (Meta Help Center).

What we have not verified

Instagram’s page describes posts. Meta’s Accounts Center page also names stories and reels. We haven’t tested which of them your app lets you send to Threads, so check the toggle on the share screen of a story or reel before relying on it.

Neither page says what happens to an Instagram caption that is longer than Threads accepts. Threads’ own limit is in what is the character limit on Threads.

Posting to both with Mellow Hub

Instagram’s setting copies a post you made in the Instagram app. In Hub you write one post in Compose and tick Instagram and Threads, with a separate caption for each if you want one: Hub checks Instagram to 2,200 characters and Threads to 500, and tells you which network a problem is on before anything is sent. What Hub connects for Threads: The Threads account attached to your Instagram login.

The Threads guide covers publishing there from Claude or ChatGPT.

  1. Create a Hub account.
  2. Connect your accounts in Channels. Each network’s own sign-in screen opens, so Hub never sees a password. Bluesky is the exception: Hub connects it with your handle and an app password, which you can revoke in Bluesky’s settings.
  3. Write the post in Compose, choose the channels and add the media. Where one network’s limit is shorter, give that network its own caption. The composer can shorten it for you.
  4. Hub checks every network’s rules before anything is sent: caption length, media count and type, a required title or board. It lists every problem at once, naming the network.
  5. Publish now or pick a time. Each network succeeds or fails on its own and returns its own link.

Hub is paid: plans start at $19 a month (Solo), after a 7-day trial with a card on file that costs nothing if you cancel before it ends, and a monthly plan's first month is 20% off. Publishing is unlimited on every plan, under a fair-use ceiling that stops automated floods (900 publications a month on Solo). One publication is one post on one account, so a post sent to five networks counts as five. There are no automatic overage charges.

Questions people also ask

Why don’t I see the Threads option when I post on Instagram?

Instagram’s help says sharing to Threads is only in the Instagram app on Android or iPhone, so it won’t show on instagram.com on a computer. Meta also says Threads in Accounts Center isn’t available everywhere, and the option needs a Threads account.

Can I turn off auto-sharing to Threads for one post?

Yes. Before you share the post, tap Also share on… or More options and switch the Threads toggle off. Choosing Share this post instead of Always share posts sends only the current post.

If I delete an Instagram post, does the Threads copy go too?

No. Instagram’s help says that if you delete a post on Instagram that you shared to Threads, you need to visit your Threads profile to delete it there.

Who can see an Instagram post that was shared to Threads?

The audience depends on your Threads profile’s privacy setting. If you have sharing to the fediverse turned on, Instagram’s help says posts shared from Instagram are not shared with users on other servers.

Can I post to Threads and Instagram from a computer?

Meta Business Suite can cross-post to Threads on its desktop version, for a Page and an Instagram profile in one business portfolio with the Threads profile added. A scheduling tool that connects both accounts can also send one post to each.
