How to post on Threads, from the app or a computer
Short answer
Tap New post at the bottom of the Threads app, write your text, attach photos or videos if you like, and tap Post. On a computer, open threads.com and click New post at the bottom right. In the app a post takes up to 10 photos or videos, and text past 500 characters continues in a new post. You can edit the text for 15 minutes after posting, but you can’t add or remove media.
In the Threads app
From Instagram’s Help Center page on starting a thread, read on 10 October 2026. A thread is something you post that appears on your profile and in a feed. It can hold short text, links, photos, videos or any mix of them.
- Tap New post at the bottom.
- Enter what you want to say. You can also tap Add from gallery to attach a photo or video, GIF, Tag to tag a topic, Poll, or Location.
- To keep writing in a second post, tap Add to thread. If the text passes 500 characters, another post is added automatically.
- To change who can reply and quote, tap Anyone can reply and quote at the bottom left and choose Profiles you follow or Mentioned only.
- Tap Post at the bottom right. A progress bar shows while it posts.
Who can see the post follows your profile’s privacy setting. After posting, Share below it sends it to Instagram and other apps.
From a computer
Yes, Threads works on a computer, at threads.com. The same help page gives these steps:
- Click New post at the bottom right.
- Write the post. Click Add from gallery to attach a photo or video, or use GIF, Tag and Poll.
- To change who can reply and quote, click Anyone can reply and quote at the bottom left.
- Click Post. To copy the link, click Share below the post.
Photos and video
The help page says you can attach up to 10 items to a post from the app. That page gives no video length, size or file type for the app. The numbers that are published are those for apps posting through Threads’ API, in Meta for Developers, updated 14 April 2026:
| Spec | Photos | Video |
|---|---|---|
| Format | JPEG or PNG | MOV or MP4, H.264 or HEVC |
| Largest file | 8 MB | 1 GB |
| Length | — | Up to 300 seconds (5 minutes) |
| Shape | Up to 10:1, 320 to 1440 pixels wide | 9:16 recommended to avoid cropping |
A carousel through the API takes 2 to 20 items, photos, videos or a mix. A video posted through a scheduler has to be within 5 minutes and 1 GB, whatever the app itself accepts. Text posts through the API are limited to 500 characters, with an emoji counted as the bytes it takes; the Threads character limit explains how to count.
After you post
- Editing. You can edit a post’s text within 15 minutes of posting, from Options on the post. Only the text: no attachments can be added or removed. After 15 minutes the choice is to delete it (Instagram Help Center).
- Replies. Deleting a thread doesn’t delete the replies to it.
- Fediverse. If you turned on sharing to the fediverse, Threads waits 15 minutes before sharing a post, so you can edit it. A post with a poll, or with limited replies and quotes, isn’t shared.
- Paid partnerships. Threads has no branded content tool. The help page says to state a paid promotion in the post, in text or a hashtag.
Posting to Threads with Mellow Hub
Mellow Hub publishes to the Threads account attached to your Instagram login: text of up to 500 characters, counted the way Threads counts, or up to 20 photos and videos. It can send the same post to Instagram and the other networks together, with a shorter or different caption for any one of them. To post at a set time, see how to schedule Threads posts.
Hub is paid: plans start at $19 a month (Solo), after a 7-day trial with a card on file that costs nothing if you cancel before it ends, and a monthly plan's first month is 20% off. Publishing is unlimited on every plan, under a fair-use ceiling that stops automated floods (900 publications a month on Solo). One publication is one post on one account, so a post sent to five networks counts as five. There are no automatic overage charges.
Questions people also ask
Can you post on Threads from a computer?
Yes. Open threads.com, log in, and click New post at the bottom right. Instagram’s Help Center gives the steps for a computer next to the steps for the app, including attaching a photo or video, a GIF, a topic tag or a poll.
How do I post a video on Threads?
Tap New post, tap Add from gallery, and choose a video, then tap Post. Instagram’s help page doesn’t give the app’s own limits. For apps posting through Threads’ API, a video can be a MOV or MP4 of up to 5 minutes and 1 GB, and 9:16 avoids cropping.
How many photos or videos can a Threads post have?
Up to 10 items when you attach them in the app, according to Instagram’s Help Center. Through Threads’ API, which scheduling tools use, a carousel takes 2 to 20 items.
Can I edit a Threads post after posting?
Only its text, and only within 15 minutes. You can’t add or remove attachments. After that the choice is to delete the post and post it again.
Why did my long post turn into two posts?
Because a post holds 500 characters. Instagram’s help page says that when a thread has more than 500, another thread is added automatically.
