What is a good hashtag strategy for Instagram?
Short answer
With a limit of 5 hashtags a post, a hashtag strategy is a choice, not a list. Pick the 5 that say what the post is about, put them in the caption, and write the words people would search for in the caption too. Instagram says hashtags put a public post on each tag’s page and that search matches text in captions, hashtags and bios. It publishes no figure for how much a hashtag adds to reach, so check your own Insights.
What a hashtag does on Instagram
Three things, each from Instagram’s own pages, read on 10 October 2026:
| Where | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| The hashtag’s page | A public post with that tag appears on its page. A private account’s posts don’t appear publicly there. | Instagram Help: use hashtags |
| Hashtag search results | Their order depends on factors that include when the post was shared, how others engage with it and whether it meets the Recommendation Guidelines. | Instagram Help: how posts appear in hashtag search results |
| Search | The text typed into Search is matched with usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places. Search covers keywords, hashtags, accounts, audio, tags and places. | Breaking down how Instagram Search works and Search on Instagram |
Instagram’s Help Center doesn’t say how much a hashtag weighs next to the picture, the caption or how people respond. A claim that a particular tag count or tag mix grows reach has no source in these pages.
Caption or comment
The Help Center says you can add hashtags in the caption or in the comments, and the limit of 5 applies to both. The 2021 explanation of Search, by Adam Mosseri, adds a rule: for a post to be found in Search, put keywords and hashtags in the caption, not in the comments. So the caption is the one place that works for the hashtag page and for Search. The page is from August 2021; Instagram hasn’t published a newer statement we could find.
Choosing 5
This is our method, not Instagram’s rule. It uses only what the pages above say.
- Write the caption first. Say in the first sentence what the post is, in the words a person would type to find it.
- List the searchable words. What would someone type to find this post: a technique, a place, a product, a question? Those words go into the caption’s text. Instagram’s 2023 advice to creators is to include relevant keywords in your content, your caption, your bio and your hashtags.
- Turn the 5 best descriptions into hashtags. Keep the tags that name the subject. Leave out a tag that would fit any post.
- Check that each tag is searchable. Instagram may make a hashtag unsearchable when its text or the content under it consistently breaks its Terms or Community Standards (Instagram Help). Type the tag in Search before relying on it.
- Keep a bank per theme. Keep fifteen or twenty tags for each of your content themes and pick 5 from the right one each time. It saves time, and the tags stay tied to the post. A bank is a convenience of ours; Instagram doesn’t ask for one.
An example, with invented values: a small plant shop posts a carousel on repotting a houseplant.
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| First sentence | “How to repot a root-bound houseplant in four steps.” |
| Words people would type | repot, root-bound, houseplant care, potting mix |
| The 5 tags | #repotting, #houseplantcare, #rootbound, #pottingmix, #plantshop |
| Left as plain words | “terracotta”, “drainage”, “spring” |
Review what you used
Instagram’s advice is to monitor your Insights, look for patterns and see which pieces of content get more reach, including how much comes from people who don’t follow you (Instagram for Creators, May 2023). Note the tags next to each post in a sheet; how to see Instagram insights says where the numbers are. After a few weeks, compare posts on one theme, using the split between followers and non-followers that Instagram points to. Don’t read a single post as a result; a post can reach more people for reasons that have nothing to do with its tags.
What changed in December 2025
Instagram’s @creators account announced in December 2025 that Instagram would allow up to 5 hashtags in a reel or post, from that day (the post on Threads). With so few, the choice of tags matters more than their number. The Instagram hashtag limit has the rule and what happens past 5.
Tools in Mellow Hub
The free hashtag counter counts the hashtags and mentions in a caption against each network’s limit, drops the repeats and copies a clean set. When Mellow Hub publishes to Instagram it leaves out a caption’s closing hashtags past 5 for that channel and says so; tags inside a sentence stay, and Hub warns when more than 5 remain. The trim applies to the Instagram version only; the other networks get the caption as written, within their own limits.
Hub is paid: plans start at $19 a month (Solo), after a 7-day trial with a card on file that costs nothing if you cancel before it ends, and a monthly plan's first month is 20% off. Publishing is unlimited on every plan, under a fair-use ceiling that stops automated floods (900 publications a month on Solo). One publication is one post on one account, so a post sent to five networks counts as five. There are no automatic overage charges.
Questions people also ask
How many hashtags should I use on Instagram?
Up to 5 per post or reel, which is the limit in Instagram’s Help Center since December 2025. Use the ones that describe the post; Instagram gives no number that is best.
Should hashtags go in the caption or in the first comment?
In the caption. Instagram’s Help Center counts hashtags in both for the limit, but its explanation of Search says that for a post to be found in Search, keywords and hashtags belong in the caption, not in the comments.
How do I find hashtags for my post?
Type the topic into Instagram’s Search. It shows accounts, audio, hashtags and places that match the text. Open a hashtag to see the posts under it, and keep it if they look like yours.
Why can’t I find a hashtag in Search?
Instagram may make a hashtag unsearchable when its text or the content under it consistently breaks its Terms of Use or Community Standards. It reviews these hashtags from time to time and may make one searchable again.
Do hashtags still help my reach?
They put a public post on the page of each tag and match search text. Instagram publishes no figure for how much they add to reach, and its 2023 advice for reach puts keywords in captions, bios and hashtags alongside original content and insights.
