What is the character limit for a LinkedIn post?
Short answer
3,000 characters, LinkedIn’s help says: “The character limit for a post is 3,000 characters.” Spaces, line breaks and emoji all count. Only the first lines show in the feed before “…more”, so the opening sentence carries the post. Bold or italic letters made with a formatter are ordinary Unicode characters, and most counters count each as two.
LinkedIn’s own numbers
From LinkedIn Help, read on 1 October 2026: a post can have up to 3,000 characters. That is roughly 400 to 500 words of ordinary English; LinkedIn counts characters, not words.
A post can also carry up to 20 photos or one video, and LinkedIn’s help for Pages recommends 1200 × 627 pixels, a 1.91:1 image, for a post with a link (LinkedIn Help).
Where a LinkedIn post folds
The feed shows the opening lines of a post and hides the rest behind “…more”. LinkedIn doesn’t publish where the fold falls: it depends on the screen, the font and the line breaks, and a line break counts as a whole line. Two short lines with a gap between them fold sooner than one long sentence. Write the point in the first line, then the detail.
Bold, italic and lists
LinkedIn’s post box has no formatting buttons, so bold and italic come from Unicode letters that look bold or italic. They count toward the 3,000 like any character, and in most counters each takes two units, so a post that is mostly styled text reaches the limit sooner. They also cost readers who use screen readers, and they don’t match a search for the plain word. The free LinkedIn text formatter makes them, shows where your post folds and counts it against the limit.
Posting to LinkedIn with Mellow Hub
Hub posts to a LinkedIn personal profile or a company page you administer, alone or together with X, Threads, Instagram and the rest, and checks LinkedIn’s 3,000 characters before anything is sent. LinkedIn publishes nothing without text, so Hub refuses an image or a video with no words before it goes.
Hub is paid: plans start at $19 a month (Solo), after a 7-day trial with a card on file that costs nothing if you cancel before it ends, and a monthly plan's first month is 20% off. Publishing is unlimited on every plan, under a fair-use ceiling that stops automated floods (900 publications a month on Solo). One publication is one post on one account, so a post sent to five networks counts as five. There are no automatic overage charges.
