We cut our weekly posting time from 5 hours to 40 minutes. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱: • One draft for every network • Captions checked before anything is sent • Scheduled once, on a quiet Monday The hardest part was deciding what 𝘯𝘰𝘵 to post. What would you cut first?
LinkedIn text formatter: bold, italic and bullet points
Make bold, italic, underlined or struck-through text for LinkedIn posts, add bullets and see where your post folds. Free, in your browser: nothing is uploaded.
By Mellow · UpdatedFormat your post
Select words in the box, then choose a style.
Each styled letter takes two UTF-16 units, the way Mellow Hub counts a LinkedIn post; LinkedIn’s own count may differ slightly.
Preview in the feed
The preview folds after three lines to show where the feed tends to cut in; the exact point depends on the screen, the font and the line breaks. Everything above the fold is what most people read.
How do you make bold text on LinkedIn?
LinkedIn’s box for ordinary posts has no bold or italic button; its article and newsletter editor does. A post does accept any Unicode character, and Unicode includes the Latin letters drawn bold, italic, script and monospace, as mathematical symbols. Select words in the formatter, choose a style, copy the post and paste it into LinkedIn. The letters look styled wherever the reader’s phone or computer has a font for them, which current systems do.
Each style, what it is for and what it costs
| Style | Looks like | Use it for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bold | 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 | The opening line, a heading inside the post, one phrase that carries the point. | Read letter by letter by some screen readers. Keep it to a few words. |
| Italic | 𝘐𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤 | A book or product title, a word you would stress when speaking. | Digits have no italic form in this style and stay plain. |
| Bold italic | 𝘽𝙤𝙡𝙙 𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙘 | A single line you want to stand out from bold text. | Tiring to read in more than a line. |
| Underline | U̲n̲d̲e̲r̲l̲i̲n̲e̲ | A label or a short heading. | A combining mark under every character; some fonts draw it with gaps. |
| Strikethrough | $̶9̶9̶ | Before and after: an old price, a crossed-out first idea. | Easy to miss at feed size; say the new value in plain text too. |
| Script, serif, monospace | 𝓢𝓬𝓻𝓲𝓹𝓽 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐟 𝙼𝚘𝚗𝚘 | A signature, a name, a code-like label. | The hardest to read on a phone. Use sparingly, if at all. |
Bullets and numbers need no trick: •, ▪, → and ✓ are ordinary characters, and LinkedIn keeps line breaks. The list buttons add a marker to every selected line, or take it away when every line already has one.
Three things styled letters break
- Screen readers. A styled letter is a different character from the plain one. VoiceOver and other screen readers may read it by its Unicode name, such as “mathematical sans-serif bold capital H”, or skip it. Style a few words, never the whole message, and never the only copy of important information.
- Search. 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 and marketing are different characters. Whether a search engine, LinkedIn’s included, folds one into the other is up to that engine, so keep the words people search for in plain letters.
- Hashtags and mentions. Type hashtags in plain letters: #𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 is at best a different hashtag from #marketing. Mentions are picked from LinkedIn’s own list as you type @, so style the words around a name, not the name.
The fold: what people read before “…more”
The feed shows the first lines of a post and hides the rest behind “…more”. Where it cuts depends on the screen and the line breaks, which is why the preview above has a desktop and a phone width. The lines above the fold decide whether anyone opens the rest, so put the point there, in plain words, and use styling to help a reader scan the rest.
How long a LinkedIn post can be
Mellow Hub accepts a LinkedIn post of up to 3,000 characters and refuses an empty one: LinkedIn publishes nothing without commentary. It counts UTF-16 units, as most web text boxes do, and in those a styled letter takes two. A post that is mostly styled text reaches the limit sooner than it looks. The character counter compares one draft against every network’s limit at once.
Questions
Is there a built-in way to bold text in a LinkedIn post?
Not in an ordinary post: its box has no bold or italic button. LinkedIn articles and newsletters have a formatting toolbar with bold and italic. For a post, Unicode letters like the ones this formatter makes are the usual workaround.
Does bold text hurt a post’s reach on LinkedIn?
LinkedIn has not said that styled Unicode letters change how a post is distributed, and we have no data showing that they do. The costs we can state are the ones on this page: some screen readers spell the letters out, a search may not match them to plain words, and a styled hashtag is not the plain hashtag.
Why didn’t my Cyrillic, Arabic or Chinese text turn bold?
Unicode has styled forms only for the Latin letters A to Z and, in most styles, the digits 0 to 9. Letters of other alphabets are left as they are. Accented Latin letters work: the formatter styles the base letter and keeps the accent.
Can I use styled text in my LinkedIn headline, About section or comments?
Yes, the characters paste anywhere LinkedIn accepts text, with the same costs. Keep the words people search for, such as your job title and skills, in plain letters: a styled keyword may not match a search for the plain one.
How do I remove the formatting?
Select the styled words and choose Clear styles, or choose it with nothing selected to clear the whole post. The formatter turns styled letters back into plain ones and removes underline and strikethrough marks.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. The formatter runs in this page. Your text is not sent to Mellow or anyone else, and refreshing the page brings back the example.
Schedule the post in Mellow Hub
Hub publishes to a LinkedIn personal profile or to a company page you administer, on its own or together with X, Threads, Instagram and the other networks it supports. It checks LinkedIn’s 3,000-character limit before anything is sent, and you can let Claude or ChatGPT prepare and schedule the post through Hub’s MCP server.
