How do you schedule an Instagram Story?

Short answer

Instagram’s own pages disagree. Its 2026 Stories guide says to tap the three dots before sharing and choose Schedule, while its Help Center pages on scheduling and on sharing a Story show no schedule step. The route Meta documents step by step is Meta Business Suite on a computer: click Create story, choose Facebook, Instagram or both, add the media, select Schedule and set a date and time. A tool that publishes through Instagram’s API can schedule a Story too, but the API can’t publish link, poll or location stickers.

In Meta Business Suite, step by step

From Meta’s page on stories, read on 10 October 2026:

  1. Go to Meta Business Suite and click Create story, from the home page or the Content tab.
  2. Under Post to, choose the destination: your Facebook Page, your Instagram profile or both.
  3. Under Media, click Add photo/video to upload up to 10 photos or videos, or drag and drop them.
  4. Edit each one: crop the aspect ratio, trim a video, add text, mentions or stickers, and click Add link to add a URL viewers can visit when they swipe up.
  5. Under Scheduling options, select Schedule and choose the date and time.
  6. Click Schedule.

You need full control of the Page or Instagram account, or content permission for it. The Instagram account has to be a business or creator account (Meta). Meta’s page names no limit on how far ahead.

Managing a scheduled Story

Click Content, then the Stories tab, and choose Scheduled. Select a Story and use the ... icon to publish it, reschedule it or delete it. In Planner, filter the calendar by Story to see them with your posts, and click an upcoming Story, then Options, to reschedule or delete it (Meta).

What Instagram says about the app

Instagram’s page on scheduling says you can schedule reels, photos and carousel posts from the app. Its page on sharing a Story lists create, record, add a sticker and share, with no schedule step, and says the feature isn’t available on computers. Instagram’s 2026 Stories guide, read on 11 October 2026, gives a step the Help Center lacks: open the Stories camera, create the Story, tap the more-options menu (three dots) before sharing, then Schedule, and pick a date and time. Instagram doesn’t say which accounts or app versions have it, so if the option isn’t in your app, Meta Business Suite is where a Story is scheduled by Meta’s own instructions.

What a tool can publish

Instagram’s API takes Stories as an image or a video, per Meta’s media reference, read on 10 October 2026:

  • Image: JPEG, up to 8 MB, 9:16 recommended.
  • Video: MOV or MP4, 3 to 60 seconds, up to 100 MB, 9:16 recommended.
  • Lifetime: a Story expires after 24 hours, as in the app.

A Story can also be shared between the two networks: an Instagram Story to Facebook Stories, and a Facebook Story to Instagram Stories, per Meta’s cross-posting page.

Scheduling Stories with Mellow Hub

Hub schedules an Instagram Story through the API, so the limits above apply. Stories take exactly one item. Reels take one video. A Story is one photo or one video, so ten Stories are ten posts, each with its own time. Hub refuses a Story with more than one item and says so before anything is sent. The Instagram Story size page has the dimensions, and the free image resizer crops one picture to them.

Hub’s record below is kept per network, not per format, and we have not singled out a scheduled Story in it. If a scheduled Story needs a link or stickers, build it in Meta Business Suite’s editor instead.

Hub is paid: plans start at $19 a month (Solo), after a 7-day trial with a card on file that costs nothing if you cancel before it ends, and a monthly plan's first month is 20% off. Publishing is unlimited on every plan, under a fair-use ceiling that stops automated floods (900 publications a month on Solo). One publication is one post on one account, so a post sent to five networks counts as five. There are no automatic overage charges.
