How do you post to Instagram from a computer?
Short answer
Open instagram.com, click Create, then Post, choose Select from computer and pick a photo or video, add a caption and click Share. Reels and carousels of up to 20 items work the same way. Instagram’s own help says sharing a Story isn’t available on computers, and its scheduling page describes the app. Stories, scheduling and posting to several networks at once take Meta Business Suite or a tool such as Mellow Hub.
On instagram.com
Instagram’s Help Center gives these steps for a photo (Instagram, read on 10 October 2026):
- Click Create on the left, then Post.
- Click Select from computer, or drag and drop a photo file. JPG, PNG and HEIC/HEIF are supported.
- Select the size of the photo and click Next.
- Use Filters or Adjustments if you want, then click Next.
- Write a caption, add a location, and add alternative text under Accessibility. Under Advanced Settings you can turn off commenting.
- Click Share.
A carousel takes up to 20 photos and videos from your computer, and the orientation you choose applies to all of them (Instagram). A Reel starts the same way, with Create, Post and Select from computer; you can add clips with Media, choose a cover and trim the clip, then Share, and a reel can be up to 20 minutes (Instagram).
What instagram.com doesn’t do
- Stories. Instagram’s page on sharing a photo or video to a Story says the feature isn’t available on computers.
- Scheduling. Instagram’s scheduling page describes scheduling from the Instagram app.
- Other networks. A post made on instagram.com goes to Instagram.
The help pages for posting from a computer name no account type. The tools below need a business or creator account.
Meta Business Suite, on a computer
Meta Business Suite is Meta’s own tool for Facebook and Instagram, on the web and as an app. From Meta’s page on posts: click Create post, choose your Instagram profile and, if you like, a Facebook Page under Post to, add the media, write the text and click Publish, Schedule or Finish later. For Instagram the limit is 10 photos in a post. Stories are made with Create story (Meta), and it can cross-post to Facebook and, on its desktop version, to Threads (Meta). Meta’s pages describe it as reaching those three and no other network.

One post to several networks from a computer
Mellow Hub’s composer runs in the browser, so you add the photo or video from your computer, choose Instagram and the other networks, and give any network its own caption. Instagram’s API takes up to 10 items in a carousel, against 20 in the app, and a caption of up to 2,200 characters. A professional (Business or Creator) Instagram account. A personal account cannot publish through any API.
- Create a Hub account.
- Connect your accounts in Channels. Each network’s own sign-in screen opens, so Hub never sees a password. Bluesky is the exception: Hub connects it with your handle and an app password, which you can revoke in Bluesky’s settings.
- Write the post in Compose, choose the channels and add the media. Where one network’s limit is shorter, give that network its own caption. The composer can shorten it for you.
- Hub checks every network’s rules before anything is sent: caption length, media count and type, a required title or board. It lists every problem at once, naming the network.
- Publish now or pick a time. Each network succeeds or fails on its own and returns its own link.
Hub is paid: plans start at $19 a month (Solo), after a 7-day trial with a card on file that costs nothing if you cancel before it ends, and a monthly plan's first month is 20% off. Publishing is unlimited on every plan, under a fair-use ceiling that stops automated floods (900 publications a month on Solo). One publication is one post on one account, so a post sent to five networks counts as five. There are no automatic overage charges.
