What size should a YouTube banner be, and what part of it is seen?

YouTube asks for a banner of at least 2048 × 1152 pixels at 16:9, recommends 2560 × 1440, and takes a file of 6 MB or smaller. On larger devices the banner fills the screen; on certain views and devices it is cropped. What YouTube calls the safe area for text and logos is 1235 × 338 of a 2048 × 1152 banner, which is 1544 × 423 at the recommended size. The maker cuts your picture to 2560 × 1440 and draws that area over it while you place the picture.

Placing the picture

  • Name and logo inside the box. Everything outside it is background that some screens will not show.
  • Let the background run to the edges. On larger devices the banner fills the screen, so the edges should still be picture, not a blank border.
  • Start with a wide picture. One at least 2560 pixels across is only cut; a narrower one is enlarged and looks soft.

Questions

What size is a YouTube channel banner?

YouTube asks for at least 2048 × 1152 pixels at 16:9 and recommends 2560 × 1440, especially for TV. The file has to be 6 MB or smaller.

What is the safe area of a YouTube banner?

The part YouTube says is safe for text and logos: 1235 × 338 of a 2048 × 1152 banner. A banner fills the screen on larger devices and is cropped on other views and devices, so a name or a logo outside that part may not be seen. At 2560 × 1440 the same share is 1544 × 423.

Where is the safe area?

YouTube’s help gives its size and not its place. The maker draws that share of the banner in the middle, which is where a banner cropped evenly from every side keeps its picture. Keep faces, names and logos inside the box and let the rest be background.

Why is my banner blurry?

Because the part of your picture that fills the banner has fewer than 2560 pixels across, and it is enlarged to fit. The maker says by how much; a wider picture, or zooming out, fixes it.

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The picture stays in this page and the banner is cut in your browser; the file is made on your own device.

The channel is dressed; now the videos

Mellow Hub does not set a channel’s banner: that is done in YouTube Studio. What it does is send a video to YouTube and to Instagram Reels, TikTok and the other networks you connect, now or at a time you choose, checking each network’s rules first. For the video’s own picture there are the thumbnail maker and the frame grabber.
