What size is a profile picture on each network?
No single size is published for all of them. X: 400 × 400 recommended. LinkedIn, profile: at least 400 × 400; at most 7680 × 4320. LinkedIn, Page logo: 400 × 400 recommended; at least 268 × 268. Facebook, Page: 320 × 320 recommended; shown at 176 × 176, 196 × 196, 36 × 36. YouTube, channel: shown at 98 × 98. TikTok: at least 20 × 20. Instagram, Threads, Pinterest and Bluesky publish no pixel size on the pages we read. A 400 × 400 square under 2 MB is inside every figure that is published, so it is the size the cropper saves first; 320 × 320 and 1080 × 1080 are there too.

Each figure is from the network’s own help page, read on 10 October 2026 and 12 October 2026. “Not published” means the page gives no number; guides quote sizes for those networks, and we have not repeated them.
A picture that survives the circle
- Keep the subject in the middle. A circle removes the four corners of the square you upload.
- Leave some room around a face. Zoomed in until the hair touches the edge, the circle cuts into it.
- Check the smallest size. Facebook says a Page’s picture can be shown as small as 36 pixels across; fine detail and small lettering do not survive that.
- Use one picture everywhere. The same face or mark on every network is what makes an account recognisable.
Questions
What size should a profile picture be?
A 400 × 400 square is inside every figure the networks publish: X’s recommended size, LinkedIn’s minimum, and the size LinkedIn recommends for a Page logo. Kept under 2 MB it is under every file limit they publish too. Instagram, Threads, Pinterest and Bluesky publish no pixel size on the pages we read.
Why does my profile picture get cut off?
Because the picture is shown smaller than it is uploaded, and not always square. Facebook, Page says its picture is cropped to a circle, which removes the corners of a square; the other networks’ help pages do not describe the shape. Keep the face or the logo in the middle and look at it inside the circle before you save.
Does the cropper save a circle?
No. It saves the square: every size the networks publish is a square. The circle is a preview of what is left when a network rounds the picture.
JPG or PNG?
JPG for a photo: the file is small, and the cropper keeps it under 2 MB. PNG for a logo with flat colours or transparency. Both are accepted wherever a network names its formats in the table on this page.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The photo stays in this page and is cropped in your browser; the file is made on your own device.
The profile is set; now the posts
Mellow Hub does not change a profile picture: that is set in each network’s own settings. What it does is send one post to the networks you connect, now or at a time you choose, checking each network’s rules first. For the pictures in those posts, the image resizer cuts one picture to every network’s post, story and cover sizes.
