How do you make a before-and-after picture?
Put the two photos into one picture, each filling half of it, with a line between them and a label on each. Side by side when the photos are upright, one above the other when they are wide. For the Instagram feed make the picture 1080 × 1350 (4:5); for a Story, 1080 × 1920. The maker cuts each photo to its half, lets you move the cut, and saves one JPG.
The shapes it makes
| Shape | Size | Each half, side by side | Each half, one above the other |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 | 536 × 1350 | 1080 × 671 |
| 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | 536 × 1080 | 1080 × 536 |
| 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | 536 × 1920 | 1080 × 956 |
| 16:9 | 1920 × 1080 | 956 × 1080 | 1920 × 536 |
Instagram keeps a single photo whole between 1.91:1 and 3:4; 4:5 is inside that and is the tallest its API takes. Source: Instagram Help Center: Image resolution of photos you share on Instagram, read on 1 October 2026.
Making the comparison fair
- Same angle, same distance. A change is believed when everything else in the two photos is the same.
- Same light. A brighter second photo looks like an improvement whatever it shows.
- Cut both the same way. Use the sliders so the subject sits in the same place in each half.
Questions
How do I put two pictures side by side?
Choose the first photo and the second, pick side by side or one above the other, and download. Each photo fills its half of the picture and is cut from its middle; a slider moves the cut when a photo is a different shape from its half.
Which shape should the picture be?
4:5 (1080 × 1350) for the Instagram feed: it is the tallest shape both the app and its API take. 1:1 when the two photos are upright and sit side by side. 9:16 (1080 × 1920) for a Story. 16:9 for a wide screen.
Side by side or one above the other?
Side by side suits two upright photos; one above the other suits two wide ones. Either way each half should be close to the shape of its photo, so that little of it is cut away. Try both: the picture redraws at once.
Can I change the labels?
Yes. They start as Before and After once you choose your own photos, and each can be any short text, or the labels can be turned off.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The photos stay in this page and the picture is drawn in your browser; the file is made on your own device.
Post the picture without opening each app
Mellow Hub takes the picture from here into one post and sends it to the networks you connect, now or at a time you choose. It checks each network’s rules before anything is sent: through its API Instagram takes no shape taller than 4:5, and 10 items in one post. A before and an after as two slides to swipe between?
