How do I crop a picture without losing quality?

Cut it and do not resize it. This cropper keeps the largest part of your picture that has the shape you choose, at the picture’s own pixels, so nothing is enlarged and nothing is squeezed. A 4:5 crop of a 4000 × 3000 photo comes out 2400 × 3000; a 9:16 crop of the same photo comes out 1688 × 3000. Zooming in keeps a smaller part, still at its own pixels.

What each shape keeps of a photo

The table is arithmetic: the largest crop of each shape, in the picture’s own pixels. Which shape a network asks for is in the answers linked below.

Cropping or resizing?

  • Crop when the picture is the wrong shape: this tool. The pixels stay as they are.
  • Resize when a network wants an exact size: the image resizer cuts to the shape and brings it to that size.
  • Keep it whole when nothing may be cut: the no-crop tool puts the whole picture on a ground of the right shape.

Questions

How do I crop a picture to a shape?

Choose the picture and a shape. The largest part of the picture with that shape is kept; drag the picture to move what is kept, and zoom in to keep a smaller part. Then save it as a JPG or a PNG.

Does cropping make the picture smaller or blurry?

No. The cropper cuts and does not resize: every pixel that is kept is the picture’s own. A 4:5 crop of a 4000 × 3000 photo is 2400 × 3000. To bring a picture to a network’s exact size, use the image resizer.

Can I crop to a shape that is not in the list?

Yes. Choose “Your own” and give the width and the height in parts, as in 5 to 7. The crop takes that shape at the largest size the picture allows.

Should I save a JPG or a PNG?

A JPG for a photograph: it is far smaller. A PNG for a screenshot, a drawing or anything with transparency: it keeps every pixel as it is. A transparent picture saved as a JPG gets a white ground.

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The picture stays in this page and is cut in your browser; the file is made on your own device.

Cropped; now post it everywhere at once

Mellow Hub takes the picture from here into one post and sends it to the networks you connect, now or at a time you choose, checking each network’s rules first. Need a network’s exact size rather than a shape? The image resizer cuts and resizes to each one.
