How do you split a picture into a grid?

Choose how many rows and columns, and cut along them: the picture’s width is divided by the columns and its height by the rows, and each piece is saved as a file of its own, numbered in reading order. Three rows and three columns make nine pieces; one row and two columns make two halves. The splitter cuts at the picture’s own pixels, so a 3000 × 3000 picture in nine pieces gives nine of 1000 × 1000, with nothing cropped and nothing resized.

Common splits

Rows × columnsPiecesWhat it makesUsed for
1 × 22Two halves, side by sideA before and an after; a spread scanned as one page.
2 × 12Two halves, one above the otherA tall picture for two screens.
1 × 33Three in a rowA banner told in three pictures.
2 × 24Four quartersA picture for four prints or four tiles.
3 × 39Nine tilesA puzzle, a contact sheet, a wall of prints.
4 × 312Twelve tilesA larger wall, three across.

For pieces that have to be a particular shape, there is a tool for each job: the Instagram grid maker cuts posts that join up on a profile, the carousel splitter cuts a wide picture into slides, and the long image splitter cuts a tall one.

Questions

How do I split an image into equal parts?

Choose the picture, set the number of rows and columns, and download the pieces. Each piece is the same size, cut edge to edge, numbered left to right and top to bottom. Nothing is cropped away and nothing is resized.

What if the picture does not divide evenly?

Cuts fall on whole pixels. When the width or height is not a multiple of the number of pieces, some pieces are one pixel wider or taller than their neighbours, and together they are still exactly the whole picture, with no gap and no overlap.

JPG or PNG?

JPG for photographs: the files are much smaller. PNG for screenshots, drawings and anything with transparency: every pixel stays as it is. The splitter starts with PNG when you choose a PNG and with JPG otherwise, and you can change it.

Is this the tool for an Instagram grid or a carousel?

Not quite. Instagram shows every post on a profile as a 3:4 rectangle and applies one crop to all the slides of a carousel, so those need pieces of a particular shape. The grid maker and the carousel splitter cut for that; this splitter cuts any picture into equal pieces and leaves the shape as it falls.

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The picture stays in this page and the pieces are cut in your browser; the ZIP is made on your own device.

Posting the pieces? Send them as one post

Mellow Hub puts several pictures into one post and sends it to the networks you choose, now or at a time you set. One post holds up to 10 on Instagram, up to 20 on Threads, up to 20 on LinkedIn, up to 4 on X and up to 4 on Bluesky, and Hub checks that before anything is sent. For pieces cut to a network’s own shapes, use the grid maker or the carousel splitter.
