What is a HEIC file, and why convert it?

HEIC is the file an iPhone saves a photo as. It is smaller than a JPG of the same photo, but many places do not take it: none of the 6 places in the table below name HEIC, and Instagram’s API names JPEG alone. Saved as a JPG, the same photo opens and uploads everywhere. This converter does it in your browser, without sending the photos anywhere.

The file types each network names

Every row is from the network’s own page, read on 12 October 2026. JPEG and JPG are the same type.

On an iPhone: three ways to a JPG

  1. Here. Choose the photos, save them; on a phone they go to Photos as JPGs.
  2. For new photos. Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible, as Apple’s page gives it.
  3. Through Mellow Hub. Post the photos straight from this page: they go along as JPGs, to every network you connect.

Questions

How do I convert HEIC to JPG?

Choose your HEIC photos above, leave JPG chosen and save. Each photo is opened in your browser and saved again as a JPG at its own size; several come as one ZIP, or go straight to Photos on a phone. Up to twenty at a time.

Why are my iPhone photos HEIC?

An iPhone saves photos as HEIF (the .heic file) by default: Apple’s page says it does so on iOS 11 or later. A HEIC takes less space than a JPG of the same photo, but fewer places open it. Read on Apple’s page on 15 October 2026.

Can my iPhone take JPGs instead?

Yes. Apple’s page gives the setting: open Settings, tap Camera, tap Formats, then tap Most Compatible. New photos are then JPGs; the ones already taken stay HEIC, which is what this converter is for.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The photos stay in this page and are converted on your own device. In a browser that cannot open HEIC by itself, the page first fetches a HEIC reader from this site, libheif, once.

Does it work on Windows, in Chrome or in Firefox?

Yes. Safari opens HEIC on its own; in Chrome, Edge and Firefox the page uses libheif, built to run in the browser, so the photo is read without any app to install.

Does a JPG lose quality?

A JPG is saved at the quality you set, 90 to start with, which is not told apart from the photo by eye. The pixels stay the same unless the photo is over 16 megapixels, which is made that size first so a phone’s browser can draw it. Choose PNG for every pixel exactly, in a much larger file.

The HEIC reader is libheif (GNU LGPL 3.0), served from this site as it was published: its notice and licences.

Your photos as JPGs; now post them everywhere at once

Mellow Hub takes one post to the networks you connect, now or at a time you choose, and checks each network’s rules before anything is sent. Other types to turn into JPGs, such as WebP? The image converter takes those, and the images to PDF tool makes one document of many.
