How do you get a still picture out of a video?

Open the video, go to the moment you want and copy that frame. A screenshot of a paused player gives a picture the size of your screen, often with the player’s buttons on it; a frame copied from the video itself is the video’s own size and nothing else. The grabber plays the video inside this page, shows the frame at the moment you choose, and saves it as a JPG or a PNG at the video’s own pixels.

YouTube’s figures are from YouTube Help: Add custom thumbnails on YouTube, read on 1 October 2026. A frame is as sharp as the video it comes from: a still from a 1080-pixel video is a 1080-pixel picture.

Choosing the frame

  • Look for a still moment. A frame taken in the middle of a quick movement is blurred, because the video was.
  • Open eyes, closed mouth. Step a tenth of a second at a time around the moment you like; faces change between frames.
  • Leave room for words. A thumbnail or a cover usually carries a title, so choose a frame with a quiet area for it.

Questions

How do I save a frame from a video as a picture?

Choose the video, move the slider to the moment you want, and save. The frame is copied at the video’s own size, so a 1080 × 1920 video gives a 1080 × 1920 picture. Move to another moment and save again for more frames.

Which videos can it open?

Whatever your browser can play. An MP4 with H.264 video opens in every browser; a MOV from an iPhone opens in Safari. If the browser cannot play a file, the grabber says so instead of showing a blank frame.

JPG or PNG?

JPG for a cover or a thumbnail: the file is small and the difference cannot be seen at that size. PNG keeps every pixel as the browser decoded it and is a much larger file.

Can I pick an exact frame?

Close to it. The slider moves in hundredths of a second and the buttons in tenths, and the browser shows the nearest frame it can reach. A browser does not report a video’s frame rate, so the grabber counts time, not frames.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video plays inside this page and the frame is copied in your browser; the file is made on your own device.

Post the video itself everywhere at once

Mellow Hub sends one video to Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and the other networks you connect, now or at a time you choose, and checks each network’s rules first. To check a video against each network’s limits before posting, use the video checker.
