Blur part of a picture: pixelate, blur or cover a face, a name or a number
Hide a face, a name or a number in a photo or a screenshot: pixelate it, blur it or cover it in black. Free, in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Pixels and blur keep a trace of what was there. For a password, a card number or an address, cover it in black instead.

How do I hide a face or a name in a picture before posting it?
Drag a box over it and choose how to hide it. Pixels and blur turn the part into a few coarse squares, at most 5 across its shorter side, which the eye cannot read. A black cover replaces the part altogether. The rest of the picture is left exactly as it was, and the file is made in your browser.
Three ways to hide a part
| Way | What it does | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Pixelate | Replaces the part with a few flat squares, each the average of what was under it | A face in the background, a number plate, a username |
| Blur | The same few squares, smoothed into each other | The same, where squares would look harsh |
| Cover in black | Paints over the part; nothing of it is kept | A password, a card number, an address, a private message |
Pixels and blur are made from what they hide, so a trace of it stays in the picture. A cover is not, and keeps none.
Before you share a screenshot
- Look at the edges. A name is often there twice: in the message and in the bar at the top.
- Cover a little more than the words. The length of a hidden word says something too.
- Hide other people first. Their names, photos and numbers are theirs to share.
Questions
How do I blur part of a picture?
Choose the picture and drag over the part to hide. It is pixelated at once; choose Blur or Cover in black to hide it another way. Draw as many boxes as you need, tap one to move, resize or remove it, then save the picture.
Pixelate, blur or cover: which should I use?
Pixels or blur for a face in the background, a number plate or a name: they look natural and make the part unreadable to the eye. A black cover for a password, a card number, an address or anything that must not be seen at all: it replaces what was there, where pixels and blur keep a trace of it.
How strong is the pixelation?
Strong on purpose. A hidden part is never more than 5 squares across its shorter side, however large the picture is, so a small box over a line of text keeps too little to read. The squares are the same in the preview and in the saved file.
Does the rest of the picture change?
No. Everything outside the boxes keeps its own pixels, and the picture keeps its size unless it is over 16 megapixels. Save a PNG to keep a screenshot’s text exactly as it was, or a JPG for a smaller file.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. The picture stays in this page and is changed in your browser; the file is made on your own device.
