How do you post a long picture on Instagram without it being cropped?

Cut it top to bottom into slides of one shape and post them, in order, as one carousel. Instagram keeps a photo whole only when its shape is between 1.91:1 and 3:4; anything taller is cropped, so a long screenshot or infographic in a single post loses most of itself. As slides it is all there: each slide takes the picture’s full width, 1080 × 1350 at 4:5, and a carousel holds up to 20 of them from the app, 10 through Instagram’s API. The splitter does the cutting and the numbering, and shows the swipe before you post.

1080 × 5,4004453
1080 × 8,1006685
1080 × 10,80088106

A last slide that is only partly picture counts as a slide. The taller the slide, the fewer of them: 9:16 fills a phone screen, and 4:5 is the shape Instagram’s app and its API both take. Instagram’s shapes and limits are from Instagram Help Center: Image resolution of photos you share on Instagram and Instagram Help Center: Share a post with multiple photos or videos, read on 1 October 2026.

Before you cut

  • Start with a wide enough picture. One at least 1080 pixels wide is only cut. A narrower one, such as a picture saved from a chat, is enlarged to fit, which makes small text soft; the splitter says by how much.
  • Trim what is not the picture. A status bar at the top or a toolbar at the bottom takes room on the first and last slide, and moves every cut.
  • Read the first slide on its own. It is the one shown in the feed before anyone swipes, and on your profile grid, where Instagram shows the middle of it as a 3:4 rectangle.
  • Check each cut. If a cut runs through a line of text or a face, try another shape: 4:5, 3:4, 1:1 and 9:16 each cut at different heights.

Questions

Why does Instagram crop my long screenshot?

Instagram keeps a photo as it is when its shape is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, and crops anything taller to fit. A long screenshot is far taller than 3:4, so a single post shows only part of it. Cut into slides of one shape, the whole picture is there, read by swiping.

How many slides can the carousel have?

Up to 20 photos and videos when you post from the Instagram app. Instagram’s API, which scheduling tools use, takes 10. The splitter stops at 20 and says how much of the picture is left out if yours is longer.

What happens when the picture does not divide into whole slides?

The last slide holds what is left at its top, and the rest of that slide is a plain ground: white, black, or the colour along your picture’s bottom edge. A remainder thinner than 4% of a slide is left out instead of getting a slide to itself, and the page says how many pixels that was.

Will a line of text be cut in half?

It can be. The cuts fall at equal heights, not between lines. Look through the slides before you download them; a different shape moves every cut, and trimming the top of the picture before you start moves them too.

Does the picture lose quality?

Each slide is 1080 pixels wide. A picture at least that wide is only cut; a narrower one is enlarged to fit and the page says by how much. Slides are saved as JPG.

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The picture stays in this page and the slides are cut in your browser; the ZIP is made on your own device.

Post the slides as one carousel, everywhere at once

Mellow Hub takes the slides from here into one post and sends it to Instagram, TikTok, Threads and the other networks you connect, now or at a time you choose. It checks each network’s rules before anything is sent, such as Instagram’s 10 items per post through its API. A carousel made from one wide picture instead? Use the carousel splitter.
