How do you make a slideshow on TikTok?
A slideshow on TikTok is what its Help Center calls a photo post: photos posted together for people to swipe through. In the TikTok app, tap +, then Photo, then Upload, and choose the photos in the order they should be seen; one photo post holds up to 35. TikTok gives no pixel size or shape for them, and photos from a camera, screenshots and saved pictures often differ in shape. The maker makes each photo a slide of the same shape — 1080 × 1920 at 9:16, unless you choose another — either whole on a blurred or plain ground, or cropped from its middle, and numbers the slides in the order you set.
The shapes the slides can be
| Shape | Slide size | Instagram, through its API | Threads, through its API |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | No: the API stops at 4:5 | Yes, up to 20 photos |
| 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 | Yes, up to 10 photos | Yes, up to 20 photos |
| 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | Yes, up to 10 photos | Yes, up to 20 photos |
9:16 is the shape of an upright phone screen; at 4:5 the same slides can go to Instagram as a carousel too. Threads’ API takes pictures 320 to 1440 pixels wide, up to 10:1, so all three shapes fit it. Putting the slideshow in order
- Lead with the photo that works alone. The first slide is the one people see before they swipe.
- Fit the photos that matter whole. A group photo or a product shot loses what is at its edges when it is cropped.
- Fill when the subject is in the middle. Nothing that matters is at the edges to lose, and the slide is all photo.
- Keep one ground for the set. The same blur or the same colour on every fitted slide makes the slideshow read as one piece.
- Add the sound in TikTok. The slides are pictures; the sound, text and stickers are added in TikTok’s editor once you have chosen them.
One wide picture to cut into slides that join edge to edge? Use the TikTok photo carousel splitter. Making an Instagram carousel instead? The carousel photo resizer does the same with Instagram’s shapes and the 20 photos its app takes.
Questions
How many photos can a TikTok slideshow have?
Up to 35 in one photo post, according to TikTok’s Help Center. The maker takes up to 35 photos and makes each of them a slide of the same shape.
What size should the photos in a TikTok slideshow be?
TikTok’s Help Center gives no pixel size or shape for photo posts. Its API, which posting tools use, takes JPEG or WebP pictures up to 1080p and 20 MB each. The maker makes JPG slides 1080 pixels wide: 1080 × 1920 at 9:16, the shape of an upright phone screen, or 1080 × 1350 at 4:5 when the same slides are going to Instagram too.
Fit or fill?
Fit keeps the whole photo and fills the rest of the slide with a blur of the photo, white or black. Fill crops the photo from its middle to the slide’s shape, so the slide is all photo and the edges are lost. The maker says how many photos a fill would crop.
Can I add music to the slideshow?
Yes, in TikTok. Once you have chosen the photos, TikTok’s editor lets you add a sound, text or stickers before you post, as its Help Center describes. The maker makes the pictures only.
Can I post a TikTok slideshow from a computer?
TikTok’s Help Center describes photo posts in the app: tap +, Photo, then Upload. Its steps for a web browser are for video. From a computer, a photo post goes through a tool that uses TikTok’s API.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The photos stay in this page and the slides are drawn in your browser; the ZIP is made on your own device.
Post the slideshow without choosing the photos again
Mellow Hub takes the slides from here, in the order you set, into one photo post of up to 35 pictures and sends it to a personal or creator TikTok account through TikTok’s API, directly or to your TikTok inbox as a draft. The same slides can go to Instagram, Threads and the other networks you connect, now or at a time you choose. It checks each network’s rules before anything is sent: Instagram’s API takes 10 items in one post and no shape taller than 4:5, and Threads’ API takes 20.
