Fit the whole photo into a post

The tallest shape Instagram’s app and its API both take: the most room in the feed.

How do you post a whole photo on Instagram?

Instagram keeps a single photo as it is when its shape is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, and crops anything wider or taller. In a carousel it goes further: every item takes the orientation chosen for the post, so a photo of another shape is cropped to match. To keep all of a photo, put it inside a frame of a shape Instagram keeps — 1080 × 1350 at 4:5 gives it the most room — and let borders fill the rest. The resizer does that with a blur of the photo itself or a flat colour, and saves the post as a JPG.

“Posted on its own” is a single-photo post from the Instagram app, which keeps shapes from 1.91:1 to 3:4. In a carousel, every photo takes the shape of the post. Choosing what goes around the photo

  • Blurred photo. The same picture, enlarged and blurred, behind itself: the frame is filled with the photo’s own colours.
  • White or black. A plain border. White disappears against a light background and black against a dark one, so the photo seems to stand on its own.
  • Your colour. One colour for every post gives a profile a look of its own.

Cutting a wide photo into several slides instead of shrinking it into one? Use the carousel splitter.

Questions

How do I post a full picture on Instagram without cropping?

Put it inside a frame of a shape Instagram keeps, with borders filling what the photo does not. Instagram keeps a single photo whole when its shape is between 1.91:1 and 3:4; anything wider or taller is cropped. The resizer places the whole photo in a 4:5, 1:1, 1.91:1 or 3:4 post, or a 9:16 Story, and fills the rest with a blur of the photo or a colour.

Why does Instagram crop the photos in my carousel?

Instagram applies one orientation to every item in a carousel. A sideways photo and an upright one cannot both keep their shape in the same post, so one of them is cropped to match. Fitting each photo into the same frame first keeps all of them whole; the carousel photo resizer does that for several at once.

Which shape should I choose?

4:5 (1080 × 1350) is the tallest shape both the Instagram app and its API take, so it gives the photo the most room and works with schedulers. 3:4 is taller still and works from the app only. For a Story, 9:16 (1080 × 1920).

Does the photo lose quality?

The photo is scaled to fit inside the frame, which is 1080 pixels wide. A photo larger than its place in the frame is only made smaller; a smaller one is enlarged, and the page says by how much. The post is saved as a JPG.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo stays in this page and the post is drawn in your browser; the file is made on your own device.

Post the picture without opening each app

Mellow Hub takes the picture from here into one post and sends it to Instagram and the other networks you connect, now or at a time you choose. It checks each network’s rules before anything is sent: through its API Instagram takes no shape taller than 4:5, and 10 items in one post. Several photos for one carousel? Use the carousel photo resizer.
