Instagram font generator: bold, italic and script letters
Copy a bio or caption in bold, italic, script and other Unicode styles, see it on an Instagram profile, and learn what styled letters break. Free.
By Mellow ยท UpdatedStyle your text
Only the letters A to Z are styled, and digits in most styles: Italic, Serif italic and Script leave numbers plain. Letters of other alphabets, such as Cyrillic or Greek, stay as they are, and an accented letter is styled under its accent. Underline and strikethrough add a mark to every character instead.

As your bio
78 of 150 characters as you see them, 130 in UTF-16 units. Instagram allows a bio of up to 150 characters without saying how it counts them, and a styled letter is one character on screen but two in most text boxes, so check a long bio in the app.

How do you change the font on Instagram?
You canโt pick a font for a bio or a caption: Instagramโs Help Center describes no font or bold setting for either. What sites call Instagram fonts are Unicode characters, the Latin letters drawn bold, italic, script or monospace, which Unicode encodes as mathematical symbols. Type your words above, copy the style you want and paste it into your bio or caption. The letters look styled wherever the readerโs phone or computer has a font for them; keep them to a few words, for the reasons below.

2026 | Stay plain |

| Underline | Iฬฒnฬฒsฬฒtฬฒaฬฒgฬฒrฬฒaฬฒmฬฒ ฬฒ2ฬฒ0ฬฒ2ฬฒ6ฬฒ | Marked like letters |
| Strikethrough | Iฬถnฬถsฬถtฬถaฬถgฬถrฬถaฬถmฬถ ฬถ2ฬถ0ฬถ2ฬถ6ฬถ | Marked like letters |
The examples are made by the same code as the generator. Italic, Serif italic and Script have no digits, so numbers stay plain in them. Underline and strikethrough are not styled letters but a mark added after every character, in any alphabet; some fonts draw the line with gaps.
Three things styled letters break
- Screen readers. A styled letter is a different character from the plain one. Unicode intends these characters โfor use only in mathematical or technical notation, and not in nontechnical textโ, and names them that way: ๐ is โmathematical sans-serif bold capital Bโ. A screen reader has to translate them back. NVDA, a free screen reader for Windows, added that step in version 2024.3 for โthe bold and italic characters commonly used on social mediaโ and has used it for speech by default since 2025.1; for a braille display it is still off by default. A screen reader without it may spell the letters out one by one, read their mathematical names or skip them. Style a few words, never a whole bio, and keep anything important in plain letters.
- Search and hashtags. To software, ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ณ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฒ and coffee are different strings. They match only where a search folds styled letters back into plain ones, a step the W3Cโs guide to string matching warns removes meaning from text. So #๐ฐ๐ผ๐ณ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฒ is at best a different hashtag from #coffee, a styled @name doesnโt point at the account, and a search for your name may not find a styled one. The generator leaves hashtags, @mentions, links and email addresses in plain letters unless you untick the box that says so.
- Other alphabets. Only the Latin letters A to Z, and digits in most styles, are styled. Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese and other alphabets stay as they are, and so do letters such as รธ or ร that have no plain letter underneath. An accented letter such as รฉ is styled as its base letter with the accent kept as a separate mark.
How long an Instagram bio can be
Up to 150 characters, says Instagramโs Help Center, without saying how they are counted. A styled letter is one character on screen but two UTF-16 units, the count most web text boxes use, so a bio written mostly in styled letters can reach a limit sooner than it looks. The bio preview above counts both. Captions can be longer: Mellow Hub accepts an Instagram caption of up to 2,200 characters, counted in UTF-16 units. For hashtags, use the hashtag counter.

Questions
Can you change the font in your Instagram bio?
Not with a setting: Instagramโs Help Center describes no font or bold option for a bio or a caption. What you can do is paste text written in Unicodeโs styled letters, like the ones this generator makes, which show as bold, italic or script wherever the readerโs device has a font for them.
Do these fonts work in captions as well as in a bio?
Yes. They are ordinary Unicode characters, so they paste into a caption or a comment like any other text, with the same costs. Keep hashtags and @mentions in plain letters: a styled hashtag is a different tag, and a styled name is not the account. The generator leaves them plain unless you tell it not to.
Can screen readers read Instagram fonts?
It depends on the screen reader and its settings. NVDA, a free screen reader for Windows, has spoken the bold and italic letters used on social media as plain letters by default since version 2025.1, and its makers say such characters can be unknown to a particular speech synthesizer or braille table. A screen reader that doesnโt translate them may spell them out one by one, read their mathematical names or skip them, so keep anything important in plain letters.
Why didnโt my Cyrillic or accented letters change?
The generator styles the Latin letters A to Z and, in most styles, the digits 0 to 9. Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese and other alphabets are left as they are. An accented letter such as รฉ is styled as its base letter with the accent kept as a separate mark, so it still reads as รฉ.
Will styled letters hurt my reach on Instagram?
Instagram hasnโt said that styled letters change how a profile or a post is shown, and we have no data showing that they do. The costs we can state are the ones on this page: some screen readers struggle with them, a search may not match them to plain words, and a styled hashtag is not the plain one.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. The generator runs in this page. Your text is not sent to Mellow or anyone else, and refreshing the page brings back the example.
Schedule the post in Mellow Hub
Mellow Hub publishes one post to Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, Pinterest and Facebook, and checks each networkโs rules before anything is sent. It counts an Instagram caption in UTF-16 units, so each styled letter takes two of the 2,200 characters it allows. The hashtag counter checks the captionโs hashtags against each networkโs limit.
Schedule on Instagram and TikTokStyle a LinkedIn post with the same letters
This tool is free and needs no account. Mellow Hub is paid, after a 7-day free trial, and publishes only what you, or an assistant you have authorised, send or schedule.
